Well, people who are looking at that as an important consideration will not even see the IS350 as a option that's too viable for convenience, some already asked in the IS forum how easy it is to put child-seats at the back, it can be done, but not the most ideal. There are many sedan buyers who can't pick the IS250/350 as a family car just because it's too small at the back, whereas the G35 can serve as both a sports sedan & a more useful family car. I am sure Nissan have this in mind when they design the G35 sedan, it has it's own little niche.
It's entry level lux in price, but can be considered as mid-size compared to other smaller entry level lux models. The ES is similar in this respect,just that it caters towards ride comfort & luxury rather than sportiness.

At least from the IS forum, I think I see more IS350 owners that are former G35 coupe owners than G35 sedans owners . . . it's non-scientific, but it's mucn easier to switch to the IS350 sedan from a G35 coupe than the G35 sedan because of practical considerations.

I can see how the IS350 would be cross-shopped a lot with the G35 Coupe, since these people are looking for max performance. And they simply go for the IS350 sedan because Lexus does not offer a coupe version.

But the volume seller is still the IS250. These type of buyers are mainly looking for a premium entry car with the convenience of 4 doors and some sport. These volume buyers will probably look more at the G35 sedan than the G35 Coupe.

That's another reason why I think the IS250 is not a direct competitor to the G35 sedan. It's significantly smaller & under-powered compared to the G35 sedan, but in the same price range(actually, can be more expensive). They appeal to different kind of buyers, the G35 will appeal to the performance minded and the people who is looking for more practicality for family use.

Why don't you think the new G35 sedan will compete with the IS350? The RWD G35 is comparable to the IS350 in many ways, though its price is a little lower.

The IS250 AWD and G35X AWD...there I agree with you. Those two cars are not quite in the same class except for price.

Yes...I read them. They are based mostly on interior room. Room is only one consideration, but if you feel that covers it, fine. I won't ask any further.

That car will be worth 20k in the used car market in 2 yrs just like the curent g35. Just might pick one up then

Size is a very important consideration for most people, that's why most manufacturers offer their models from small, mid, to large sizes.

The only real reason why the G35 coupe and IS350 sedan are heavily cross-shopped currently is because lexus still doesnt offer a coupe. As of now, BMW and infiniti are the only ones who offer appealing coupes in that class.

I think the ES350 competes with the G35 Sedan than the IS350 does

I think the Acura TL competes more with the G35 sedan for a FWD car than the ES.

But people do cross shop some strange combination of cars from my own observations of the people I know or heard of.

I'm guilty of that. I cross-shopped a Mini Cooper S with an ES350 at one point
