Who knows how these drivers were driving around during this test? As nice of a job it was, they did not do a scientific experiment, but rather "a commentary."

One thing I found different from other tests is that they did did the test using the same route, the same time of day, the same traffic, and the same speeds since they all filled up at the same gas station and followed each other to the destinatin. That tells me under this driving conditions the test is more valid than if they tested each car at different times of the week under different conditions. This test may not to totally accurate in that most people don't spend 90% of their drive on the highway, but they do spend most of their time there vs the city.

Here's another great comparison test video from Australia featuring the Prius vs. the Golf TDI.

They took the manufacturers marketing department propaganda claims of 1,000km per tank of fuel, and challenged it, by driving in the real-world situation, from Melbourne to Shi-tney (added hyphen to avoid stupid forum censorship) via Wagga. The two editors swapped drivers and took turns leading the way so slipstreaming was eliminated.

In the end the similarly priced Prius trounced the Golf, as the Golf was cutting out and ran out of fuel at Bathurst, only 775km away from Melbourne, while the Prius still had plenty of fuel left. And THE most amazing part is that the Prius only has a 45L fuel tank vs. the Golf's 55L.

The test was broadcasted in 3 episodes (for the 3rd episode please fast forward to half way). Enjoy.

you can rest assured that if anyone, CR did the most "scientific" tests, based on pre-determined set of rules and they drove all cars at the same time...

(from previous post)

On a 150-mile trip mostly over highway, CR got:

41 mpg with a 2006 Jetta TDI DSG (automatic)
48 mpg with a 2005 Prius
45 mpg with a 2006 Civic Hybrid

Jetta TDI 24 mpg (city) 46 mpg (hwy) 12.2 seconds (0-60)
Civic Hybrid 26 mpg 47 mpg 11.7 seconds
Prius 35 mpg 50 mpg 11.3 seconds

Also, the data on fueleconomy.gov shows:

41.7 mpg for the 2006 Jetta TDI (DSG automatic)
40.9 mpg for the 2006 Jetta TDI (manual)
47.3 mpg for the 2006 Prius
47.5 mpg for the 2005 Prius
44.7 mpg for the 2006 Civic Hybrid

(taken from Priuschat post).

Of course, you dont get the noise either. :-).

About the first benefit of helping to deal with the state's expensive gas, maybe California's government isn't REALLY interested in cutting gas consumption because of the VAST revenue (tax) they take in from it. Just like they're not REALLY interested in people obeying speed limits, and why banks LOVE bounced checks (their biggest profit maker).
