Guess who is outselling Rav4 and CR-V in Japan
Rav4 and CR-V have been outsold by new Mitsubishi Outlander in Japan consistantly from October 2005 to February 2006. New Outlander was introduced in Japan in fall of last year. LINK
That is a good news for Mitsu. I believe that Outlander will be magnificent car.
I did a little bit of research and found out a lot about upcoming Outlander.
Navigation with 30GB on board hard drive (optional)
Smart key w/ push button start
6 speed tranny with paddle shifters
HID lights (optional)
Aluminum roof
AWC straight off Lancer Evo
ASC straight off US spec Evo
18' wheels (optional)
Dial that allows driver to choose from three options of drivetrain: 2WD, 4WD and 4WD Lock
3.0l PZEV V6 220hp
Rear DVD (optional)
and some crazy stereo (optional)
This car has a lots of goodies standard and hopefully it will resurrect Mitsu in next year or so.
Truly amazing vehicle from such wounded company.

You know the weird thing that I have been trying to figure out?
JDM Mitsubishis are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than these USDM Mitsubishis here. In terms of build quality, there is no comparison.
My family back home used to have Mitsubishi Pajero ( motero ) and it was a bullet proof car. People actually like Mitsubishi SUV in asia countries.

Not necessarily. There is nothing magic about the Japanese-market Mitsubishis that makes them any better than the U.S. versions.
Take, for instance, the Montero ( Pajero ) you mentioned. That vehicle has always had a better-than-average repair and reliability record, even here in the U.S. The only reason that it is not on Consumer Reports' Recommended List is the tendency of the last-generation model to get the tipsies and raise its inside wheels off the ground under hard cornering.....something that will consistantly flunk you out in CR's tests even though these are not sports cars and are not meant to be driven as such.
Other Mitsubishi products, such as the Eclipse, have been unreliable in both U.S. and Japanese versions.

Interior is too simple for my European taste, but might work better for americans?
Whats the point of having extremly simple HVAC stack when then you have 15 buttons on steering wheel?

Mitsubishi opened its doors in Mexico (and also in Canada) for the the first time a few years ago. The Outlander is one vehicle I see a lot more of down here than the Rav4 or CRV. I think on pricing and its size it probably wins out with a lot of families.
The concept of quality in vehicles in Mexico is not well understood unlike it is in the U.S.

More Attractive than Rav4 or CRV
Very "modern" interior if not simple. In other words I'm not impressed either. Exterior wise it looks good.
