While I do agree that the Camry's interior could use some improvement, it's obvious that this isn't a fair article. Basically the more expensive, more powerful V6 Fusion is better than the less expensive, less optioned, 4cylinder Toyota? Whodda thunk it?
Pleeeassssee. The first paragraph contains more BS than I have heard out of Linert in a long time. How many years has it been since the Taurus and Camry were neck and neck for sales? Ten? He makes this seem like the latest iteration of a raging battle.

They could simply use SE or LE V6 if they wanted.
In any case, Edmunds tested XLE V6 vs Fusion, Accord and Sonata, and they said it beat every car in every test. Fusion ended up the last in the comparo :-).

Less-than-sterling assembly quality? Poor trim fits? Considering they probably got a press fleet vehicle driven like mad, i don't doubt that...but what else in assembly quality? what about the trim fits? how about comparitive NVH? shoddy (paid) journalism at its worst...

Well yeah, Detroit News is not exactly an "unbiased" source of information. But then again neither are the Toyota/Honda leg-humping mainstream mags like C&D, MT, etc. So I see this as simply a different take (swap out one biased viewpoint for another one), and a completely valid one at that.
Yes, the Ford Fusion is cheaper. You can get the Ford with more equipment at a lower price than a comparably equipped Camry. Personally, I do like the styling of the Fusion 10x better than the Camry. I sat in both and think the interior design is about a wash. Materials quality seemed about the same. Rear seat room goes to the Fusion though, at least for me. My tall legs had my knees going right into the rearward arching seat backs in the Camry and I literally could not sit in the back of the car. I had more room in a 3-series. Kudos for a 6spd automatic tranny too. Boo on no manumatic controls though. At least from where I'm standing, the only thing the Fusion is really missing is the 3.5L DOHC engine that'll be out soon. And do you want to be blown away by an interior? Just sit in the Lincoln Zephyr / MKZ. Just as good as any Lexus I sat in.
Between the two I would take the Fusion, once it gets the 3.5L engine.
No the Fusion is not a "reskinned" Taurus. Good god.
Lowest safety ratings. You're spinning the truth on that one too.
The Nissan Altima also did just as bad without side airbags. In fact a lot of cars do poorly in that test without side airbags.

I haven't driven either of them so I can't comment. However, I had 5 Fords before I bought my IS and I never had a problem with any of them. And they were driven from Mexico to Alaska, Oregon to Oklahoma.

The new Camry interior is a joke.

I give props to Ford for using the Mazda 6 chassis on the Fusion. But I still cant get over the bland styling of the interior. It's just a scaled down, blacked out version of the 500's interior. I actually like the new Camry's interior especially compared to the previous Gen 5 Camry. I don't really care for the light blue plastic accents ala Solara.

If anything is bland, it's the new camry's styling in comparison to the Ford Fusion.
