This one is easy.

Vintage Spyder : Porsche 550 replica.

They start at $25000, but a nicely tricked out one can easily be had under $40K.

This is my dream car....that's within relative reach.

LOL, seems like you hate Acura with greater passion than I hate BMW.

bit, ( bitkahuna), for instance, just fell in love with a new Explorer.
And my loaded Explorer cost a lot less than $40K.

I just did a 650 mile trip in it and it was great. No squeaks, creaks, rattles, nothing. Navigation is terrific - pinpoint accurate. The custom programming of the car in the 'setup' mode is neat too - I can tell it if I want the doors to auto lock on driving off, whether I want the headlights to stay on after I get out of the car and for how long, whether I want all doors to autounlock when I open the drivers door, etc. I just got WeatherTech fitted floor liners and cargo liner to avoid dirty shoes and cargo making it marked up. Uh oh, that means the modding has begun. Now about those Flowmasters...

Back to OP question - if someone handed me $40K and said 'get what you want' and given that I already have a pick up truck and an SUV - I'd be going for FUN, FUN!

I think it would be convertible.
I think I wouldn't give a crap about back seat room.
I think it would handle GREAT.
I think it would have a stick or SMG/DSG.
Hmmm... maybe Och was right on this one - an S2000? Although maybe the complete lack of low end torque would be a bit old. A Mustang GT converible would solve that and it sounds awesome, LOL - but then I'd have *3* Fords.
Maybe a used Corvette converible. That would be sweet.

For under $20k:
2007 Fit

2006 GTI
$28,515
or
2006 MINI Cooper S
$29,800

For under $40k:
2006 G35 6MT sedan
$37,350.00

For under $50k:
2006 330i sedan
$47,840

For under $60k:
2006 M3 coupe
$59,530

For under $90k:
2006 M5
$89,715

For under $150k:
2007 S600
$144,875

For under $200k:
2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur

For under $400k:
2006 Rolls-Royce Phantom

well for 40k the new IS350 sounds really appealing.. But my love for mustangs still exist so maybe a used 2005 supercharged Saleen. I think i saw one on ebay for around 35ish..

Its so hard these days finding a car.. there's so many nice cars around that its hard to find just one..

They're also made by Greenville Tech graduates at the Spartanburg plant here in South Carolina ... depending upon which model you choose to buy.

As for the ~ $40,000 vehicle, I'd choose an Audi S4 slightly used or, as mmarshall suggested, the Acura RL. I think it's got one of the most gorgeous interiors for the money - a great value.
