Default Spy Shots: 2008 Chevrolet HHR SS

Chevrolet looks to be prepping a turbo-powered HHR crossover with an “SS” badge, sourcing the Pontiac Soltice GXP’s turbocharged, direct-injection in-line four, which was rated at 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque (in the Solstice, at least). These shots of the HHR SS mule indicate the bowtie brand engineers are attempting to conceal the intercooler (look at the front bumper). Whether or not the turbo powerplant will make it into this HHR body style or a forthcoming, freshened version remains unclear at this point.

Although nearly all powertrains cross multiple platforms in today’s GM, Chevy has a special history with turbocharging. The 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder is generally believed to be the second widely-produced automobile with a turbocharger (the first being the the ‘62 Olds Cutlass Jetfire).

Why do people buy that thing? It's even uglier than the PT Cruiser!

I simply am baffled as to why people would buy that thing? GM was a bit late in the retro fad trying to catch up w/ the PT Cruiser...i swear it's truly baffles me why anyone would buy that thing

Spy photos earlier this year showed a prototype of a Chevy HHR with a modified front bumper and an added-on front intercooler, indicating for the first time that Chevy was working on a high-powered HHR. Now these latest photos, taken just recently at Germany’s famous Nürburgring racetrack, show that work is progressing on making this into a production model for the 2007 model year. The prototype shown has a completely new front bumper, with a large opening feeding air to the turbo's intercooler. The bumper differs from the standard HHR’s design in that this one is shaped more like an air dam, decreasing the amount of turbulent air that gets pushed under the vehicle when driven at speed. The upper grille is also different, with a wide open mesh that will allow more air to flow to the radiator. The engine will likely be the 2.0 liter direct injected Ecotec Turbo also used on the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line.

This vehicle, like the new Mustang, has dynamite looks but poor-quality materials and IMO is poorly built. What's more, though I have not driven a Turbo version, the non-turbo one I test-drove had the road manners of a drunken turtle.

Reminds me of the pick-up truck from the 70's sitcom "Sanford & Son" for some reason

Haha, I give the HHR until 2010, because the Pt Cruiser is done in 2009.

I have a friend who had an HHR. Horribly unreliable for a relatively basic car and engine.

road.

Don't be surprised if you start seeing that turbo four in other FWD cars from GM moving forward. WTF is Honda's turbo four gonna show up a Civic or Accord or S2000?

I agree though, the retro styling on the HHR never worked for me. But they do sell a shat load of them.
