Default Zero to 60 MPH in 3.1 Sec: Caterham's Superlight Edition of CSR260

This is one well-squeezed orange. The Caterham CSR260 Superlight weighs a waifish 1,245 pounds and goes 155 mph.

Caterham CSR260: No windshield, no heater, no carpet…but 260 horsepower.

CATERHAM, England — Caterham Cars turns up the wick on its range-topping CSR260 with a new stripped-out Superlight edition.

The CSR260 Superlight is road legal and ultrafast, thanks to a sweet 2.3-liter Cosworth engine that makes 260 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque, married to an ultralight two-seater that weighs a mere 1,245 pounds.

That's less than half the weight of a Pontiac Solstice. The car boasts a tubular steel space frame and aluminum body panels, with a fiberglass nose. Standard gear includes a six-speed manual transmission and 15-inch alloy wheels shod with Avon tires.

How fast is it? Top speed is 155 mph. More to the point is the 0-60-mph acceleration time: a pulse-quickening 3.1 seconds.

Superlight customers will have to do without some perks. The conversion swaps the windshield, heater and carpet for a quicker steering rack and a limited-slip differential. The CSR260 Superlight also is fitted with a new set of Dynamic Suspensions shocks made by MTCe.

Other Superlight pieces include a carbon-fiber dashboard and fenders, a black powder-coated cockpit, a quick-release Momo steering wheel and a wind deflector. The option list features a dry-sump lubrication system, roll bar, leather seats and a tonneau cover.

What this means to you: The ultimate in bugs-in-your-teeth motoring. Who needs heat and carpeting anyway?

I would at least wear a helmet. You can only get away with that once in Florida, after that first time driving it during Love Bug season, you'd sell it!

I remember growing up in Miami watching some motorcyclists (no helmets, that was way back) and they would be putting their hand near their face trying to sway the damned things away.
