Video: Who has a superior AWD system? Volvo or Subaru?
#16
Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX470 were the best AWD system in the world. Don't forgot Toyota famous AWD too. Two different AWD! Subaru uses for rally and Volvo for uses daily four season condition AWD. I can't tell each one had superior AWD! My score is draw!

The Outback's test results could be the specific tires on that car...tires can make a tremendous difference.
Talk to just about any mechanic or technician who works on vehicles for a living and most of them......at least here in the U.S...... will tell you that Subaru has the best AWD systems among lower-priced vehicles.
Subaru did not get to be the official car of the U.S Ski team ( over a lot of higher-priced European AWD's ) for nothing.

Now thats a lot different than going on trail like video shown here, where electronic based systems, without real differential blocking wont work that good under heavy usage. This is where true mechanical system with blocking differential will help a lot. However, how many of your average drivers will ever tackle hills like that?
Even our Land Cruisers are becoming more and more electronic based systems, because it reacts a lot faster than standard torsen differential. Of course, they still have torsen, and full blocking centre differentials for real off road usage.
Subbie is simply behind the times a bit when it comes to electronic aids...

" Behind the times " does not necessarily mean a lack of electronic aids either. Electronics sometimes get you in trouble...as Mercedes and BMW have found out. And both Subaru and the Volvo Haldex systems ( the main issue of this thread ) use electronically controlled center differential clutch packs...Subaru depending on engine and transmission.
If the Subaru systems are so inefficient, then why does the U.S. Ski team use them so much to get to their favorite slopes...which are often buried in snow?
