Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a four-door convertible based on the S-Class luxury sedan, according to a published report. The V12 car will be unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reported Tuesday. The magazine didn't elaborate further on specifics of the car, but said it is inspired by the 1950s Mercedes 300 four-door convertible. If true, the rumor would represent the latest in a widespread model diversification effort at Mercedes. In recent years, the automaker has broken from its core vehicle lineup and expanded its offerings to contain countless niche vehicles.

So, will the convertible look more like the CLS or the S-Class? I think it will look more like the CLS (with the exception of the rear and size) if they decide to make such a thing...

If anyone can pull this off its gotta be Mercedes. Very innovative company(though its not really a new idea). I like it. Its different and no other company currently has a direct competitor.

If sucessful, I wonder which company will follow first??

eh, although it might be a good idea, i think they should start the 4 door converitble with a smaller car first. Maybe the C-class?

That pic reminds me of the other Maybach coupe concept, which was very stilleto-like and ugly. This one isn't that bad, but has too much Lincoln/old Cadillac in there with the angles.

I'd much prefer a version that is closer to the look of the New S-class, particularly the front. The last successful variant of which was the W140 version: 600 SEC

i am scratching my head...... why would they wanna have the s class as convertible when they don't have one based on e class? i mean, 2 class is HUGE, convertible out of it?!

I actually think Mercedes want a large convertible with a V12 to compete with something like the Bentley CGT convertible, plus it will be unique to have 4 doors.
An E-class based convertible - something like a convertible CLS can be appealing, but may be too close, especially in interior space to the C-class-based CLK ?

I think Mercedes should stop adding more models into thier lineup, and worry more about fixing the current ones they have.
