Default Pontiac Announces Solstice "Turbo" GXP Pricing

New Turbocharged Roadster to Sell for Under $26K

Detroit - At the height of the summer solstice, Pontiac today announced that the turbocharged 2007 Solstice GXP will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $25,995, including a $600 destination charge. The 260-horsepower roadster arrives in Pontiac dealerships this fall.

Powered by GM's new direct injection, turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine, the Solstice GXP adds a 47 percent boost of power to augment the road-gripping performance and seductive styling already available in the base model roadster.

"The passion customers have for the Solstice continues to amaze us and we have been sold out of the 2006 models for the past couple of months," said Mark-Hans Richer, Pontiac marketing director. "There's already a waiting list for the 2007 models, so we believe the GXP will only extend the Solstice's position as the top-selling roadster in the U.S., proving that a domestic car can retake a segment previously dominated by imports."

Model year to date through May, Pontiac has sold 15,145 Solstices, outselling the closest competitor in the segment by more than 2,600 units. Solstice remains one of the industry's hottest selling cars, contributing to a 20 percent increase in Pontiac showroom traffic since the beginning of the year and double digit percent sales gains in key coastal markets.

Pontiac is a division of General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) and markets the G6 sedan, coupe and retractable hardtop convertible, GTO, Solstice roadster, Torrent SUV, Grand Prix, and Vibe. Later in 2006, Pontiac will introduce the turbocharged Solstice GXP roadster and G5 sports coupe. Pontiac sold more than 437,000 vehicles in 2005, ranking third among GM divisions in total sales.

Tha'ts great news the Solstice is doing well. The General needs all the help he can get.

The GPX version look the same as the regular Solstice to me. I'd love to see some performance
numbers and comparisons against the mighty Miata and it's cousin, the Sky.

As much as I love the looks of the Solstice, I'd still get the Miata if I were in the market for
a roadster below $30K.

I'd consider one of these. It's probably going to give S2000's problems with that amount of horsepower in that little car. I'd get a used SLK32 AMG personally

S2000 is immensely better in handling, braking, and the overall driving experience, S2000 has nothing to worry about besides a 0-60 time which means little on a track

S2000 is very tough to beat in terms of balance and overall package. I don't think you can compare honda technology with GM just yet.

Time for Honda to release S2000-TT. If they turboed the RDX, they can turbo the S2K!

meh if i was buying a small roadster, i would either cheap out and buy a miata or save up a bit more to get a lotus elise
or save up a whole lot more to get a boxster S

i still dont like the front of the Solstice

S2000 has a double wishbone suspension with a 6 speed. The S2000 will out handle the GXP. The GXP is a better value though (if it doesn't fall apart).

That looks like it is going to be successful.

Isn't Honda going to seize the production of the Honda S2000 sooon?

Great idea as to many people I knew who wanted one or had one, complained about it being underpowered.

With the PT Cruiser, this was also a frequent complaint and people wondered why they did not offer it with a turbo to begin with. However, the automaker is correct since if the car does not sell in its first year, the concept might never take off regardless of how much power you ram into it.
