Default GM / Renault / Nissan Alliance & Other Speculations (Update Pg 4/5)

WOW, GM stock skyrocketed 9% today. 2 car companies on the brink, I don't see the advantage, what does GM get from Nissan?

I think you may have mis-read the article. Kirk Kekorian (sp?) recommended that Nissan/Renault purchase a minority share of GM to form a partnership. Neither Nissan/Renault nor GM came up with this proposal and neither of them have responded to the recommendation. Kekorian owns 10% of GM but does not own any of Nissan/Renault. GM has only said that they will look at the recommendation.

Dang, I believe it will really kill Nissan's image if this was true.

GM should look really hard at this one. International alliances can only serve to help them.

Why would it kill Nissan's image??

Are you saying Nissan products are vastly superior to GM products?

Did Chrysler kill MB's image? They sure didn't.

Talking about image, that reminds me of something that I learned in Mexico quickly about the auto industry here.

You can talk about one company having better quality or better image than another, but about the only thing in Mexico that truly exists is prestige.

Talking to friends from other countries, they concur in this.

For instance, there is widespread thinking here that the more expensive the car, the better off in terms of quality. Unfortunately, since car prices are much, much higher than in the U.S., there is difficulty in knowing which ones have quality and which ones do not. The dissemination of this information does not exist. Basically, one might say, well I had a Ford and it sucked, while another guy says my Chevy was great so I will buy another.

Only recently, has there been some talk in the press and quality surveys where I now think people are starting to catch on that are great values for less $$$. I know it sounds strange coming from a predominantly American mindset, but something I do not think that Nissan working with GM would degrade any image in most of the rest of the world.

The merger of Chrysler and MB's killed MB's quality???

MB's quality was already on a downward spiral long before Chrysler came into the picture my friend. Even now, the merger has absolutely nothing to do with MB's quality.

Actually all that Tracinda Corp, Kerkorian's Investment company, has recommended is that GM set up a panel to explore this option. In that regard, the title of this thread is pretty misleading.
