Oh definitely the 5-series. My parents are also considering buying a new car, and they said IS looks too young, like driving their children's car, so they will consider 530i, ES350, or GS350. But among 3-series and C-class, I say 3-series.

Funny, last time I checked there are plenty of Asians driving BMW's and Mercedes too. But if
your mother wants to stand out and have a little bit of the snob factor, BMW is the way to go.
The 5 series is definitely a big step up from the 3 or C class.
My girlfriend really likes the looks of the 5, I can't understand why.

Where I live, BMWs and Mercedes are extremely common - like seeing a Ford Taurus in Detroit or a pickup truck in Texas.
Part of the reason I bought a Lexus is that is was less common than the usual 3/5 series or C/E Class garden variety cars. Of course, I also have neighbors with Lotus Elises, F430s, Murcielagos, Gallardos, etc. (yes, I am the White Trash in my 'hood).
Between the 3 and the C, I would go for the 3. One of the guys here at the office just leased a 325i sedan- they are like $349/month on lease... dirt cheap. Heck, the C230 can be had for $299/month! The 3 is a newer body style, and drives better in my opinion.
The IS350 is cooler than both of them, but she probably won't be able to lease/buy one as cheaply.

I'd go for the 3 series. I ain't paying that much for a 3-pointed star (esp. with the exchange rates). You can have a C240 4Matic at $44k and still be left without a CD player or full leather interior.
The model I'd pick would be a 325i with Dakota leather (I hate leatherette), steptronic (can't drive manual
) and a power moonroof. If I had money to spare, I'll go for the Premium Package (electric seats, moonroof, ski-pass through, auto-dimming mirrors, HK audio system).
