I may be partly wrong, but I think GM's losses were (and usually are) due to out of control prior committments. Like paying all the pensions to the good ol' boys that destroyed the company through the 80's and 90's.

And Toyota's best month in history for what? Recalls and product failures? They're experiencing all the usual pains of becoming a top, high-volume car company. Quality control problems are already becoming a major issue.

Most of Toyota's recalls have been very pro-active. Compared with GM and Ford who only initiate a recall after there are more than a "few" accidents or lives lost, I believe that they are doing the right thing.

Most of GM's 4 billion loss was a write off. Analysts are looking at GM very positively, as they would have turned a significant profit this year if not for that. Scaling back the company and resolving their pension/legacy costs is helping them return to profitability. They are actually doing something right.
