The Lexus GS450h hybrid sedan managed to place fourth in its first ever 24-hour endurance race. It did so despite a 300 pound weight disadvantage and an unexpected pit stop for brake work. The car also had to make other stops for the crew to refill the dry ice cooling system for the car's batteries.

Shamelessly misleading headline
Here's the full result:
http://www.tokachi.org/race/24hours/result/final.html
And here are the cars in the same class as the GS450h--ALL FOUR of them including the GS450h.
http://www.tokachi.org/race/24hours/entry/01.html
Look for the ST1 Class in the second column of the full result...the other three cars in the same class placed 1st to 3rd...while the GS450h placed 17th overall among 33 cars, losing to 13 other cars below its class.
Can't help but feel bad that they had to resort to such a lame marketing spin. (4th place despite 300lbs disadvantage and brake work blah etc. woo hoo!!) Dead last is dead last. Well at least they finished the race.
Oh and...Porsche GT3 is still the track king!

Against 2 Porsches and a 350Z it looks like - no wonder it didn't have a chance.
But yes, totally lame 'spin'.

OK, did some deciphering... following up on XeroKool's assessment...
As I understand it, the ST1, ST2, ST3, ST4, etc. is the grouping, and the second number is the finishing position in that group.
So the GS450h was in the same group as 2 Porsches and a 350Z. The other 3 cars not only beat the GS450h, they beat EVERYTHING else, finishing 1-3 overall. The GS450h finished 17th, but here's the kicker. Look at the number of laps completed!
ST1-1 24hr 00min 55.353sec 956 laps
ST1-2 24hr 00min 55.865sec 945 laps
ST1-3 24hr 01min 26.144sec 941 laps
ST1-4 24hr 00min 55.638sec 865 laps
The winning car did 91 more laps than the GS450h.

No, none of the four cars in ST1 has an actual 4.5L engine even though the class is allegedly a ">4,500cc" class. I guess they used a power-equivalent method to determine which class a car belongs to. And since the 3.5L GS450h makes as much as a regular 4.5L (or so Lexus claims ), it competes with the other three cars that also don't really have a 4.5L but make similar level of power.
