The 330i 1/4mile was 14.5@96.7 compared to the IS350's 13.8@102.9
Yeah, I agree.

BTW, EPA mpg is disappointing. Only 19/27 for the 6MT. So compared to the 2006, the city number stays the same while the hwy number only goes up by 1.

I think we just need to wait a little longer to see some other comparisons from other sources first before we can definitively say which is faster. Also, when looking at MPG numbers Im not really so sure that MPG is a huge selling point for either of these cars (IS350, 330i, G35). To be honest, the people I've known with any of these dont really complain about the MPGs...

We all know that there can be large fluctuations in test numbers based on temperature, humidity and other factors. Numbers for the IS350 have been variable (C&D: 5.1s, Motortrend (1): 5.2s, Motortrend (2): 5.5s, R&T: 6.0s, Edmunds: 6.1s).

What we do know is that in this Motortrend test, the G35 outaccelerated the 330i by .8 seconds (5.4s v. 6.2s).

I'd probably wait for some head-to-heads between the G35 and IS350. I'm thinking that the G35 6MT and the IS350 will be equally fast, and the IS350 will be faster than the G35 auto by a few tenths.

I'm not saying that the G35 will be faster. It probably won't be, because of the IS350's superior torque, peak power at lower rpms, and extra gear auto v. auto.

in the C & D comparo where the IS350 did 0 - 60 in 5.1s, it was a very hot and humid day as well. I think I recall them saying how the 330i's A/C struggled in the weather, and it may have even broke, although I don't remember.

And you seem to be somewhat contradicting yourself, saying you're not really sure how anyone can say which is faster, then saying that the IS350 probably will be faster.

Looking at the specs, the G35 is heavier, has to rev higher for it's power, most likely doesn't have as good of a power or torque curve, and has somewhat dissapointing mileage (compared to the IS350).

I predicted a long time ago that the new G35 likely wouldn't beat the IS350's output, and I was right. I also predicted that mileage would still be poor.

My guess is that the manual G35 *could* be equal to the IS350 performance-wise, but it's almost certain the auto G35 will be slower.

C&D puts the actual tested 0 to 60 into some kind of proprietary algorithm, normalized to certain conditions (I think 65 degrees and low humidity), then the computer extrapolates the numbers, which are the ones that are published.

I said that I think the manual v. auto will be the same, and the IS350 will be slightly faster auto v. auto. That's just my guesses.

Doesn't matter either way, because real world IS350 owners have been hitting 0 - 60 in 5.1s, and 1/4 mile times of 13.7s. These are mirroring C & D's numbers.

Either way, we will see soon enough a comparo of these cars duking it out. I expect to see the new 335i sedan (if it's available in time), the new G35, and the 2007 IS350, with it's TRAC/VSC defeat switch.

"has to rev higher" is a design choice, not requirement. revving higher is a benefit over other engines of the same size, assuming all else is equal. (you could argue that the IS engine is part DI but then the G engine breathes better) anyway, not only does revving higher give you the opportunity to make more power, but if you can control the power curve, horsepower will be pretty flat near the top. that means you have a wide and strong powerband. due to the importance of the area under the curve, this gives you an advantage when racing. as far as the IS's torque advantage goes, that won't really matter- horsepower in the powerband matters not low end torque. the torque will however, make the car feel more responsive on the street.

to know which car is really faster we'll definitely need to a direct comparison, but at this point anyone honestly looking at this data has to admit that it will be very close.

Default Future comparos

Isn't it pretty much a forgone conclusion that the 335i will win all the future comparos?

I mean, even the "underpowered" 2006 330i has been kicking butt left and right, I don't think it has ever lost a comparo.

Basically, the IS350 and the G35 will be fighting it out for 2nd place.

Thanks for the new wrinkle in the brain. Your explanation provides a good view.

Hopefully, there are more things to the IS350 and G35 than "power." I think we as consumers are more savvy than that...

If you want to read the entire review check out this link...

MT conclusion... G35 great performer, but not better than the 3-series this time around.

Not really shocked by any of the numbers they pulled off in this test. Kinda matches its luke warm redesign IMO.

Well for similar level of performance at least it is much cheaper than both the IS350 and 335i, and it does come with a manual version.

Thanks for the link BTW.
