Hmmm... under 50 grand... huh?
For me it's either GS350 or M35 sport....

I would probably go for M35 sport since it's comes with all the options I need!!

Lotus Exige. Exotic new car for only $50K. It has a Toyota engine so you
can probably do a lot of work yourself.

Why get only one car?

I say get a nice used 2GS & an RX300/330 for the crummy weather.

I had come across a Silver on Black for $56k that I almost pulled the trigger on! It is unquestionably one of the sweetest looking cars on the road. However... At 6ft 225lbs it's more like a Sports Car or at least Coupe to me, once I slide the seat back to a comfortable position. It is a very sweet ride nonetheless just not quite large enough.
Oh and by the way I can also obtain a new gen 6 series for about the same amount. I have drven it also, but I just require more room.
More than likely I will be getting this absolutely superb pre-owned/certified 745i - White on Black - Loaded with every option available! 28k miles and under 100k bumper to bumper factory warranty. No other car I can think of is as nice, prestigious, fits my needs, or proctected (warranty) in this price point. As a matter of fact, it will look alot like D's examples here:

Not a fan of used cars, so Lotus Elise for fun or BMW 3-series for daily driving.

Very cool - try and get at least a 2004 as the 2002s and 2003s had some issues (ok a lot).

Also on the M5, if it is like the other e39s, there is a clip that prevents the driver's seat from going all the way back. While I'm sure there is a good reason for it, many people have removed this clip (it is on the seat track) and they get an extra inch or two for the legs.

Lot of Bimmer fans here... particularly the E39 M5.
That is a great all-around car no question. I do NOT want a manual tranny for now. And let me say that if I were to be in the market for a Sports Car, the C6 is a no brainer. I've driven it several times and it is all around the best bang 4 the $ bar none!
The upcoming M3 should be quite interesting, but again... Time for some luxury and room.
