Toyota Corolla: 40 Years Old this year!!
Cars come and go but the Toyota Corolla – much like Dr Who – has regularly regenerated to meet the demands of time and outlasted most rivals. This year the world’s biggest selling car is celebrating its 40th birthday – and it is not finished yet.
The first generation Corolla was introduced in Japan in October 1966. Now, 40 years on, the Corolla is built in 16 different countries, a barometer of the global expansion of Toyota as much as the popularity of the model itself.
In 2005 alone, 1.36 million Corollas were produced in 16 countries/regions* and by the end of June this year, cumulative worldwide production reached 31.60 million units. That represents more than 2,160 cars every day – 90.1 cars per hour, every hour – for 40 years.
Since its debut, the Corolla has been the number one seller in Japan in 36 out of the past 40 years. It not only helped establish Toyota in Japan, but the USA and UK, too, and in the 21st Century it continues its ‘missionary work’ with growing sales in developing markets such as China and South America. Another 40 years at the top seems very likely.
Over the years Corollas have won races and rallies, done innumerable school runs, helped millions learn to drive and, in the shape of the 1980s’ T Coupe (AE 86), even become a youth culture icon through the Initial D series of books, TV shows and movies.
Happy birthday Corolla!

No. The Corolla, good as it is , is simply too small a car to become #1 in the U.S. Most Americans clearly prefer something bigger. Like the Civic, though, it will very likely stay in the top 10.

agree, in terms of #1 i think it's still gonna be camry / accord (that size). the corolla / civic will continue to sell hot coz' they are great bargain for the money of course

Wow, 40 yrs old huh? That's something to ponder about in this day and age of new-tech-wave automobiles.
Also a Corolla owner here, 1998 CE model. My wife drives it primarily. Only around 94,000 miles on it but like others said, very reliable and good on fuel economy

I basically grew up in 3 Corollas in my lifetime.
E31 1979 Corolla 2 Door Deluxe 1.6L 2TC
AE92 1988 Corolla DX Sedan 1.6L 4A-F
AE92 1990 Corolla LE Sedan 1.6L 4A-FE
It's all about the Toyota heritage! A definite milestone for the Corolla as it turns 40 at the same time Toyota turns 50 Years in the United States.

nice. We had a 1997 DX Plus (got totalled by someone running through an uncontrolled intersection) which had no problems for the 30,000kms of its short life. It got replaced by a 2000 LE model which, while not exactly the most exciting car to drive or look at, is just damn reliable. I learned to drive in that car and it had everything you could want in a small Cdn$20,000 car at that time. It was replaced at 36,000kms by an 02 Camry (which we still have) because, well, we're not kids any more so my parents decided to get a bigger car.
