Toyota set to cut truck production in U.S

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's leading automaker, is set to lower its U.S. production target for some vehicle models because of higher fuel prices and concerns the economy could slow, according to a media report Wednesday.

Toyota is considering trimming production at its new pickup truck assembly plant in Texas, the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported.
The plant, scheduled to open in November, has an annual capacity of 200,000 units, but Toyota is targeting to make 150,000 pickups in 2007, the report said.

Toyota will double its orders for passenger cars to 200,000 from Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., the U.S. production subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., from October 2007, the report added.

Separately, a Toyota spokesman said the U.S. division did not expect 10% to 12% sales growth in 2007, a level consistent with growth rates in recent years, according to reports.

Although not formal target was given the spokesman said the automaker was expecting U.S. sales growth more along the lines of 3% to 5%, according to a Reuters report.

Toyota's U.S. sales are reported to have risen 11% this year.
Toyota is on track to surpass General Motors as the world's largest automaker by volume next year.

This has been denied by Toyota.

a. Tundra targets are not being dropped.
b. Toyota is not looking into expanding Subaru's Indiana plant for additional 100,000 cars.

Lots of fake reports these days.

Remember when another report claimed that Toyota is going to delay their models to ensure quality? This was denied by Toyota as well, since they have always done that in past as well.

Hmmm spwolf, where is your info backing these comments? I mean, I believe the media more than you. Especially since I also heard about this. And I live 20 miles from the plant.

Toyota May Overhal North American Plans

Toyota Overhauling Strategies for North America, Newspaper Says; Automaker Denies Report

TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota plans to build fewer pickup trucks and more small- and mid-size cars in North American in 2007 because of high oil prices and a slowing U.S. economy, a newspaper said, but the Japanese automaker on Thursday denied the report.

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to produce pickups at a Texas plant at rates much lower than its maximum capacity because those models are likely to be affected by high oil prices as people switch to models that get better fuel mileage, the national daily Asahi reported on Wednesday.

It meanwhile plans to double its annual production rate of higher-mileage Camry cars at an Indiana plant of partner company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. to 200,000 cars in October 2007 from an initial target rate of 100,000 cars in Feb. 2007, the report said.

Toyota spokesman Tomomi Imai denied both aspects of the report on Thursday, saying there were no plans to boost car production at the Indiana plant and that Toyota had never publicly revealed a production target for pickups at the Texas plant.

The Asahi report said the Texas plant, due open at the end of this year, would have a capacity of 200,000 units a year, but that Toyota was now shooting for a production target of 150,000 units in 2007.

It said Toyota plans to increase the number of small- to medium-sized cars to tackle rising oil prices and the plan enables the automaker to have the production capacity of 2.08 million automobiles in 2008 in North America, surpassing the 2 million mark for the first time.

Funny ... these "reports" always make me laugh.

As spywolf said, Toyota has denied both the Subaru plant addition and the Tundra production cuts.
