Thank goodness I'm not the only one that thinks the rear looks like the 3GS. For a sec I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

I'm still not feeling the bangle designs as someone else stated. My favorite 5 series has been the e34.

I don't think the next gen 5-series would look like this.

Those are pics of the rumored mid-life update due early next year (as a 2008). Basically only the front and rear-end has changed in those pics.

The current 4.8L engine is due to stick around for a while - the turbo V8 could only be in response to the GS460 - but unfortunately I think it will tread too much into the M5 territory.

We shall see.

Well said Doug! The current 5 series hasnt even had a facelift yet. so there is no way BMW is dropping an all new one. Even with its "controversial" styling they are getting as much life out of this one first. We all remember the facelifted 7 series.

Exactly why I said it would be better to get into this than the M5.

Default Next Gen 2009 BMW 5-Series Spy Photo's & Artist's Impression

Different front and extra wide fenders

BMW is preparing a replacement of the very successful 5-Series. The current model range has been on the market since 2003, and now first prototypes have been sighted during testing in the city traffic of Munich.

‘The prototype on the photos has a different front end and extra wide fenders. Apparently the next generation 5-Series will be bigger by growing in overall length, width and wheel base. The new model will also get bigger wheels, the standard size is 17 inch, wheel sizes 18 and 19 inch will be optional. Due to the wider track and lower height the all new styling of the new 5-Series will make it look almost like a coupe.

Power comes from a large choice of 6 petrol engines (ranging from 2.5 litre 218hp to 4.4 litre V8 biturbo 408hp) and four diesels (ranging from 2.0 litre 175hp to 3.0 litre 300hp)

It looks a little "chunky" with those fenders. If BMW wants to make the 5 bigger, they need to make it more streamlined than that.

You don't make a performance car fat and bloated; you make it muscular and chistled...
