You won't see the Lotus Elise (pictured) at just any old rental-car counter. The lightweight head-turner is going to be made available to select exotic-vehicle rental fleets in select U.S. cities.
Date posted: 09-19-2006
ATLANTA — Lotus Cars USA has announced that it plans to roll out its Elise sports car to small, independent fleets that specialize in exotic rental cars.
Lotus spokesman Colin Price said the Elise will not go out to "big national agencies, such as Avis or Hertz." He said the plan is to roll out the first group of cars into as-yet-unnamed small fleets in a few states, including California, Florida, Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania. More states are expected to be added in the coming months. It is the first time the Elise will be available for rent.
"We know from discussions with our dealers that they have had numerous requests to rent exotic cars, and the Elise is right there at the top of the list," said Robert A. Braner, Lotus Cars USA president and CEO.
The Elise is an open-top two-seat roadster that weighs less than 2000 pounds.
What this means to you: Your next rental ride could actually be thrilling.

A friend of mine and I took an Exige out once over to Cuernavaca (south of Mexico City over 10,000 foot mountains) and it was a little bullet...took the winding mountain highway with ease...excellent and easy shifts.
