Default Super-Sport: Bigger, badder 2009 BMW Z9 to hit market in 2009

Illustration by Brenda Priddy & Company

AutoWeek | Published 10/17/06, 1:17 pm et

BMW may have shut down production of its range-topping Z8 sports car in 2003, but the German engineers who came up with that car clearly haven’t been sitting on their hands. Word out of BMW is the company is working on another super-sports car, both in coupe and roadster configurations, which will eclipse the Z8 in performance and bad-boy attitude.

This illustration reflects the direction BMW is believed to be taking with the design of the new car, which is expected to hit the market in 2009.

Depending on price and power, won't this make it a confusing buy against the 6/M6???
Hopefully it'll have a hard-top convertible to go against the SL

i dont know... i love the look of the Z8
its got some classical lines and was in the form of a true sports car

this though... doesnt really stand out to me
just looks like a 6 series with its butt chopped off

Those lines are very, very Aston Martin to me.

I love their powertrains, still not fond of the wrappings they are in. Those sculpted sides did not work on the Scaglietti......

Agree. Probably the thing I miss most about the 330i's I owned, was the luscious inline 6 engine.

That car would be sharp (in a love-it-or-hate-it Bangle BMW way) if it came out today. By 2009, that look will be old and even the rest of the BMW lineup will be hitting a new generation with a new look.

Also, it's funny that their goals are to "eclipse the Z8 in performance and bad-boy attitude". I didn't think those were two of the complaints people had about the Z8. They might be better to work on aluminum construction that doesn't warp, for example.

This is what the 6 should have looked like when it first came out, or at least the next gen 6.

This is what Bangle should introduce as the 1 Series. A condensed version of course.

Same here man, especially the HAMANN version slammed on 20's. Shame the car was a little overpriced and never really caught on in the US
