I wouldn't be surprised if VW gave it to him for free. That'd be great advertising for a car that pretty much has very slow sales to start with. I always thought they were nice cars, but there's just others I'd buy in that segment.

I'd think it was free. It says VW presented him, not VW sold to him...

Lexus Fanatic
Given that the Vatican is the world's richest single institution ( reportedly even more so than Buckingham Palace ) I don't think that His Holiness would have found it that difficult to come up with the 100K or so to pay for this car ( perhaps more if it has armor and bulletproof glass ) had VW not just given him ( or his chauffeur ) the keys.

Lexus should have a service like that if they have a service like that they should have it shown more on the market, would be interesting too see a stretched LS460 and etc.

1. it's still a Volkswagen, even though this one is built by Bentley.
2. They didnt sell it to the masses, they had to give it away and ....
3. The only reason it was given to him was b/c it was known that he drove a VW before he was appointed to the positionof Pope and this can be used as a publicity statement now.
Can see it now, "Our cars are so good,, they're heavenly,, the all new Volkswagen Phaeton!!"

this brings up the question of why dont more car company's give out cars for publicity purposes.... imagine if Lexus gave keys to the new LS to chris bangle... that would be hilarious.... and probably make it in the news worldwide. That publicity would be well worth 70K...
