Orion Propulsion brought this Chevy to the X-Prize competition last week at Las Cruces NM. It is a work in progress - a test bed, as it were, using a rocket engine that contributes to the environment using a unique set of propellants, nitrous oxide and . . . roofing tar! It has not been turned loose yet, but static tests are promising. At first glance, it looks like either that engine needs a bell nozzle, or that bedliner is going to get one EXTREME thermal test.

For the truly brave, a bicycle powered by a much smaller rocket tube is capable of a 0-55 mph time on the order of semi-incredible.

In fact, these engines are developmental models for rocket engines to power private spacecraft and racing aircraft - including engines with up to 300,000 lbs of thrust. That ought to get your Chevy over the levee.

I wouldn't mind straping these on my RX.
