I don't think it's directly comparable though, innovations of a company is not limited to just technology put into the cars, so the businessweek article ranking is not about exactly the same thing as your link to my post on the Telematics Research Group (TRG) Automotive Technology Index.

Well if the IS500 comes out it will definitely be targeted at the M3, CTS-V (which will be all new next year by the way), and RS4.

But I'll betcha they aren't intending to 'kill the M3' by being a better M3 than the M3 is... typical Lexus style is they'll play an angle they think will attract some buyers away - like 'here is 90% of the performance and feedback for 70% of the price and with twice the reliability'.

Because even people who are shopping for impractical cars will respond to practicality sometimes.

Audi AND Mercedes tried M3 killers and have still failed. I don't see Lexus beating the M3 but offering a Japanese alternative.
5.0 liters, V-8, big brakes, suspension changes, bolder looks, 8 speed auto, 415hp...nothing to complain about.

I could give a rats *** if the car is 3 tenths slower in something I won't do

Just glad Lexus is offering an alternative.

I can only imagine the moderating that will need to be done with the IS-F vs M3 threads, lmao.

"Today, innovation is about much more than new products. It is about reinventing business processes and building entirely new markets that meet untapped customer needs. Most important, as the Internet and globalization widen the pool of new ideas, it's about selecting and executing the right ideas and bringing them to market in record time."

Toyota has done an EXCELLENT job in that regard.

Now.. as it pertains to innovations (loosely defined as "inventions") where is the "Toyota was first" list.

1. Self Parking (Prius)
2. 8 Speed automatic (LS460)

I gave you a start..... feel free to add to that long li

Though I'm interested interested in BMW's long list of innovations.

I'll start a list:
5spd auto - BMW
6spd auto - BMW

hey doug
find a better article

I like the title
Night Vision, Head-Up Display, Navigation, and BMW Assist Help BMW to Outpace All Other Marques.

“BMW has been a technology leader for many years, as it is part of the brand’s positioning,” says Phil Magney, principal analyst for TRG.

In the index, BMW was acknowledged for offering the ultimate in helpful, high-tech aids. Integrated navigation systems with iDrive and Voice Command, BMW Night Vision, Park Distance Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Head-Up Display are offered as features – helping BMW achieve the top ranking. Entertainment offerings include Sirius Satellite Radio and HD Radio, iPod integration and rear seat entertainment.
Night Vision was 1st offered by Cadillac in the 2000 Deville, it's no longer available

Lexus offered it in the 2003 LX470.
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...rticleId=77844

BMW finally gets Night Vision
http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...26/208600.html

GM was the first automaker to make HUD commercially available on vehicles
http://www.dupont.com/safetyglass/en...ts/hud_gm.html
GM should welcome BMW to last decade.
Is this feature for all the fighter pilots who drive cars?

Park Distance Control...sonar parking, yeah I think everyone has that. Lexus can also park itself
I'm pretty sure this first appeared in the Sclass

Can we get a backup camera..

Integrated navigation systems with iDrive and Voice Command
Oldsmobile was first to offer GPS based Navigation in 1996 Eighty-Eight. DOD's satellite technology is far more interesting than anything BMW is can come up with.

We both know you like Lexus/Acura Navi better than BMW

I don't think Lexus wants i-drive, probably cause they're electronic interface works well. Enjoy talking to your BMW, but will it say I love you back?

Adaptive Cruise Control
we all need this

Entertainment offerings include Sirius Satellite Radio and HD Radio
Lexus only offers XM

iPod integration and rear seat entertainment.
RSES is on the RX, GX, LX, and LS
ipod intergration on the IS, and poorly encoded mp3s have no place in an automobile.

BMW Assist Help
is this is a wannabe Onstar?

The new tranny weighs as much as the outgoing model with less parts. It allows the LS to have class leading fuel economy and it is better or tied for acceleration.
With less displacment.

How is that not innovation?
By adding 2 more gears, they were able to make the lower gears shorter and closer together, thus improving acceleration and mileage because it will be easier for the engine to "pull". If BMW comes out with a 9 or 10 speed next year, it'll be the same deal. Not innovative. Just more gears.

Now, my question is... is this a 4 speed transmission with a high and low range, or does it actually have 8 gears?

Somewhat inaccurate too. Who made this list?

Disc brakes

Catalytic converter
This was introduced by GM in 1974 for automotive use.

Metal catalysts
This one makes no sense at all.

I'm not spinning anything. Your claim was BMW is vastly more innovative than Toyota isn't accurate. And I already added dual swivel adaptive front lighting.

4. In 2003, the automaker incorporated the world's first radar-based pre-crash system into the Harrier

6. World's first cloth seat fabric that uses 3 rows of stitches instead of 4.
7. World's first windshield washer solvent reservoir placed in the left rear of the engine bay.
8. World's first windows tinted with soft green instead of green.

Who cares.

Guys, this thread is drifting away from the original topic, which is the hardtop convertible. Please DO NOT turn this into another Lexus vs. BMW bickering thread, thanx.
