Edmunds First Drive: 2007 BMW X5

Sorry, but if the LS you drove was unstable at 90mph, there was something seriously wrong with it. I've drivin my dads LS at 90+ and it felt fine, as does my 2IS... Heck, my old Pontiac Grand Prix felt fine at 90mph.

My GS400 with a bunch of suspension mod does not feel as stable, not even as stable as my old 1992 acura legend.
The steering on my car is wishy washy and there is the dreaded float. I can't imagine the LS being more stable, unless it has a lot more downforce with stiffer suspension to boot.

Is there some sort of TSB or something I am not aware of?
When I complained to my dealer they said it's normal. I believed them, afterall Lexus aren't meant to be autobahn cruisers.

The benchmark comment was innacurate.
The ML went on sale well before the X5. The MDX and X5 went on sale the same year. The only two SUV's that may have benchmarked the X5 are the Tourag/Cayenne/Q7 (the Cayenne isn't being built this yr), and Range Rover Sport. The GX470, Navigator, and Escalade/H2 three major players in the class certainly didn't use the X5 as a benchmark.
The 3series is a benchmark, so is the 5series. But the X5 isn't.

Do you have any idea how much power a Maybach has?
Would it surprise you if I said that engine can easily make over 700lb-ft torque?
The GX, Navi, and Escalade are no where near the market the X5 is in.
I'm not a German fanatic, ask anyone on mbworld.org
I give things how it is, I don't sugar coat and I don't take well to lying, I was never good at it

So what do you think is in its market?

Don't know what to tell ya buddy... Maybe it's the driver? Who knows. What I do know is 90mph is not a problem in any Lexus or most other cars I've ever driven. I once had a Chevy Aveo rental, it's the only vehicle in recient history that I can remember that felt a bit twitchy at 90mph, oh, and the Chevy Express cargo van we own, it's not too stable at 90mph either. Like I said though, 90mph in the LS was fine, never has it felt unstable at that speed.

My GS400 with suspension mod feels wishy washy on the freeway at 90mph. I seriously feel its unstable as the steering is too soft and the car floats too much (L-tuned setup). I can't remember how it was when the car was stock, but I'm willing to bet its just as unstable. I know it's not me because my old 1992 Acura was able to tackle the freeway perfectly fine with only little hints of float, but nothing like my GS.
90mph in a lexus is definitely driveable, but I dont have much confidence in the car at that speed, at least not with Lexus' current offering.

If anything, my MRS feels the "worst" due to direct steering and firm suspension. 80 MPH in that car feels like 130 in others, despite it having much better handling in general than any of other cars I have even driven.
Toyota and Lexus have done a lot since 2003-2004 to improve underbody aerodynamics that help reduce lift at higher speeds, so new LS should be superb autobahn cruiser. In fact, none of the German reviews, which usually drive a lot on autobahn mentioned anything similar to any kind of unstability at higher speeds.
So i suggest you try "lexus' current offering" before calling them unstable because of your tuned 99 GS.
