Exclamation Clear wheels showcased at SEMA (updated pics pg 2)

Wednesday November 1, 2006 3:41 PM EST - By: Michael Kwan

Car enthusiasts are like kids in a candy shop when they walk into SEMA. It truly is the granddaddy of them all, the absolutely best car show there is. We see some of the craziest innovations there, and today is no different. First, we saw spinners. Then, we saw wheels with LEDs in them. And now, D'Vinci Forgiato has come up with clear wheels. Yes, clear. As in absolutely transparent.

Apparently made of "Lexan or something", they give the appearance that your tire is simply floating around your disc brakes. The reps say that these wheels are just as safe as any other wheel on the market, but I'd imagine it'd be a bit of a pain in the you-know-what to clean out the brake dust. There are also versions available for motorcycles.

You're rolling on dubs? D'Vinci Forgiato is rolling on clear... like deodorant.

Lexan is strong but I don't know if it will hold to abuse over time.
My Nalgene water bottle is made of lexan but it can dented.
Lexan wheels I suppose would be cheaper as well.

I would be worried about the heat not getting cooled. No openings = no fresh air.

Ha, I'd have to find the person with those on the street, and watch the liability counter fly through the roof. and laugh when they fail.
It's one thing to have lexan on a low weight bike, but if youve got 1000lbs sitting on each corner, that'll lead to continual deformation over time.

Not only that, but heat deforms lexan... wonder if theyve ever measured the heat wheels absorb? I've had painful burns on my hands just from the metal, lol the tires were even hotter.

Then again, most those cars drive up on the podium and trailer at most.
Haha, I think I've found a new use for the redneck stereotype, trailer trash! *no offense to rednecks, as I am*

edit: "apparently made of Lexan or something" probably just a lucite block. reps will say anything.

I wouldn't want to buff the scratches off that thing after about a month of use.

A month of use? How about a day or two. Just your typical rock and debris off the road will scratch Lexan. Lexan scratches so incredibly easily I don't see how this could work other than for a show car.

I can't wait until someone puts water and live fish inside these wheels.

It is trick looking, not sure if it will catch on well, also it will only look ok if there is a nice BBK sitting behind them

Yup a well done BBK is a must with that setup.

I guess it looks kinda neat. I generally strongly dislike giant aftermarket wheels, but I kinda like that because it's actually kinda plain and simple and brings focus to the potentially nice looking brakes and suspension behind it. Hmmm... maybe some soft backlighting in the wheel wells while driving would be even cooler looking.

Then the only problem is keeping the damn things clean!

How in the world did you DENT a lexan Nalgene water bottle? I have always been told if anything they will crack, but never dent.

I use them for backcountry hiking and had one that was just old and scuffed up and I decided to experiment by driving over it in my friend's 2003 Accord. It suffered some scratches from the asphalt but didn't crack or dent!

Sorry let me reword that, it's got scuffs all over it. Which I guess are really small dents. But honestly if you can scuff up a Nalgene easily don't you think that rocks, etc. getting spit up will screw up these wheels quickly?
