I believe it is a trashcan, just a cleaner looking one, instead of a bag hanging off the shifter.

Some people actually need a trash can in their car??? Wow. Wait a minute...I know a chick who needs a HUGE one of these, lol. I honestly don't accumulate trash like that. Most trash I have is a gum wrapper or a mapquest printout, and I just stick it in my pocket until I'm at my destination, then put it in a real trash can.

I wish someone would invent one of those little "roomba" vacuums for the car. A little robot that moves around the car vacuuming up leaves, grass, and dirt. That would be tight!

Actually in WA state (tree-hugger paradise) you have to have a trash bag in the car by law.

I considered getting one of these because I eat in my car. But it was inconvenient so in the end I just stuff things in my door pocket. And I plastic bags behind the passenger seat.

Mikeloc24,
It's the sad truth up there. If you get stopped for anything, they can hit you for it just like a seatbelt. Also driving is no peach either. There are cops...everywhere (even in the stix). But of course it's for your protection, not to generate revenue for the city, county and state governments...

I remember my dad had this '78 Cadillac Sedan DeVille (purchased new) - it had a little waste can built into the passenger side kick panel. I think my grandmother's 1980 Eldorado had it too.

Kind of a handy feature especially with a car load of kiddies.

Did a quick ebay search - this isn't the same year, but you can see it in this pic:
