Honda expects to launch fuel-cell cars in general market by 2018
Friday, December 29, 2006
Associated Press
Honda Motor Co. expects to sell fuel-cell vehicles in the general market by 2018, a news report said Friday.
Honda President Takeo Fukui disclosed the forecast in a recent interview, Kyodo News agency said.
In September, Japan's third-largest automaker unveiled its FCX Concept fuel-cell car, which is planned for limited marketing in Japan and the U.S. in 2008. Honda declined to say what the vehicle will cost.
"In 2018, I believe the development (of a fuel-cell car) will have been very advanced," Fukui was quoted as saying by Kyodo in the interview in Tokyo on Dec. 25.
"It will become a real possibility to a large degree," he said, according to Kyodo.
Kyodo said Fukui was confident that many customers will want to buy a fuel-cell car if it costs no more than about 10 million yen ($84,000).
A fuel-cell car runs on power generated by oxygen in the air combining with hydrogen stored in a fuel tank. The end product is harmless water vapor.
Earlier this month, Japan's second-largest automaker, Nissan Motor Co., said it plans to launch a fuel-cell vehicle in Japan and North America in the early 2010s.
Fukui acknowledged that some technological challenges need to be resolved before fuel-cell cars becomes common, including improving the way in which hydrogen is stored and reducing the cost of producing hydrogen, Kyodo said.
Honda officials were not available for comment Friday. Many companies and government agencies were closed for the year-end holidays.

actually they plan to sell it by 2008 at a limited release quantity
and reach the mass market production for demand by 2018
the FCX will have built in reformer to take natural gas outlet in houses to convert to hydrogen
btw did u know that a single fuel cell car can produce enough electricity for half a block of houses?

Where is all this natural gas going to be procured? Doesn't anyone at Honda know North America has a severe natural gas shortage? We're looking at building LNG sea terminals so we can import LNG from the Middle East because domestic production is inadequate to meet current demand. How does that solve the foreign oil problem? Oh well...

wha?
i dont think NA has any shortage on natural gas at all
more specifically methane
natural gas usually comes from oil rigs and wells as pockets of natural gas is usually trapped above the oil layer
sometimes there is so much natural gas that oil rigs burn it off, thats why you see a big flame on an oil rig sometime
right not its not just about solving dependence on crude oil
but also saving the earth
unless we all want to live underwater in 50 years, we should do something about the way we live

the weird thing is, Honda calls BOTH their FC cars FCX? The sleek 4-dr sedan as well as the EV Plus version.

I cant wait too see these on the market.
I wonder if Toyota/Lexus will go into the fuel-cell market or stick with the hybrid market.
Or would be nice to see Toyota/Lexus come up with something new that your car can still run on diesel or petrol or even grease (put one of those 3 in the engine and it would run) highly unlikely but would be nice.
One thing I hope Toyota/Lexus put a small solar panel somewhere on the roof probably on the sunroof so it can keep the battery charged at times when the car is off. If I remember Mercedes has that on their S-class, too keep the cabin of the car cool when the car parked.

right now toyota has 2 hydrogen fuel cell concept cars
FINE-S and FINE-N
both are still in concept stage and they arent very public about their prototypes that arent solid in the plans
so it is likely that toyota will stick with traditional hybrids for another while and let others take the pioneering roads first
