Default BMW Z9 Spied in Munich ??

new convertible was spied in Munich today and it appears to be a successor to the BMW Z8, or possibly now called Z9. While the Z8 was a hit with enthusiasts, the new version of the car is expected to be successful beyond merely a few thousand enthusiasts and a starring role in a James Bond film. With that, expect the price of this new car to extend well beyond the Z8’s base price of $128,000. Well above $150,000 would be a good guess.

From these photos from our friends at KGP Photography, we learn that the Z9 will not have a tapered rear end–something that was seen as beloved part of the Z8 (and 507). That is, of course, unless the duck tail rear end character line is meant to fool us. The trunk will have to accomodate the Z9’s retractable hardtop, however, so it’s no suprise that it would have to grow.

While the Z8 ran an E39-M5-sourced V-8, details of the Z9’s powerplants are unknown at this time, although we expect the company’s V-10 from the M Group will be used, in addition to a diesel application for European markets.

The photography from Munich shows only this convertible. However, it’s expected that the forthcoming Z9 will also have a coupe version.

Here’s what KGP Photography had to say:

BMW is testing new prototypes for a new convertible. Whether this is the new Z4 or the more upscale Z9 is a matter of intense conjecture at this point. We originally thought Z4, but closer inspection suggests that this could be BMW’s SL-fighter–the Z9. This prototype is clearly larger than today’s Z4, but that also supports earlier reports that the next-gen Z4 would be growing up a bit to make room for an entry-level Z2 roadster.

The most noteworthy details on this prototype are the side windows–a glass-to-glass pillarless design reminiscent of the BMW 8-series and
the Mercedes CL. Is that enough of a clue to prove this is the Z9?

Quite possibly, especially when taking into account the slim, sleek convertible roof that appears to be a fake canvas top glued to a retractable hard roof that’s hidden beneath. Consider that the Z9 is aimed squarely at the tin-topped SL, and is reportedly similarly equipped, and the clues further point to this as the Z9.

The Z9 program looks right on target to hit the market in 2010, as a front-engined, retractable hard-topped, high-performance alternative to Mercedes’ SL.

These things seems to be getting uglier. Not a fan.

That looks like a grown up Z4.

If BMW does make the Z8/9, it needs to be much different than its "sister sibling," just like how the M6 is significantly different than the M3.

As for looks, it's all subjective. I'm a fan of the Z4 design. Sidepanels for this one is a little quirky though...

How can you guys possibly make any conclusions about the design on this car? It's totally covered front to back by at least a good two inches of plastic camo. The only thing you can really tell about the car is the proportions, and already it's looking a lot better than the Z4 ever did.

z4 replacement I say, the tires look a bit too skinny for a z8 type of car

I think they are trying to disguise it as a Z4. It's really pretty pointless to make any conclusions about the looks yet, especially with that much camo.

well its coming, its so covered, can't say nothing about the styling. Nothing can look worse than a Z4 though.

It seems to me BMW like to make open-top vehicles, but lack of a good looking true sports car.

and judging by F1 and how BMW and Toyota performs in F1, shouldnt the Z9 >> LF-A by that logic?

lol jk

i think its too early to even comment anything wisely on this car
we all need more info before getting into another debate

i do like the styling of a Z4 though
but i would still buy a boxster over Z4
