Why no more inline 6

This is very interesting about the GE head exhaust port being superior to the GTE's. Could you explain in detail about your modification to your friend's 2JZ-GE engine but in layman terms?
What is "underboost" and what was the ultimate purpose of underboosting--to fit a turbo?

I could explain, but I can't explain because the owner wouldn't appreciate it.
I can say I wanted to fill the lower third of the exhaust ports to give them a sideways D shape (for a lot of reasons), but the owner said no welding so I just cleaned up the turn, knocked off the casting flash, and called it a day.

that ge and gte head thing is still wierd to me though...
so the block is the crowning jewel of our 2j's, i personally would rather mod a I6 over a v6.
so because of the construction of the 2jz's they will easily out perform other inline 6's from other manufactures?
what about the TVR 4.0L I6

I have never touched a TVR engine, so I can't comment on it in any way.

Not underboost - under boost. The GE head is for a naturally aspirated engine, not a boosted engine, so I was making a distinction between running the design configuration vs. a modified configuration.

so i guess what this all means is that we can all kiss the days of overenginerred tough as nails engines goodbye, huh
also is there a reason for the ge-gte head differences?
maybe it's because the na motor has to rely on the atmosphere and piston stroke to suck the air in and the gte is having the air forced in so the ports don't have to be as big as the ones on the ge head, that is my idea of a common sence explanation but i might be wrong.
i'm still a little bumed out that the I6 is going away, but i don't own a car company so i guess i can live with it.

It's obvious you are very knowledgeable about the 2JZ heads. On a related topic, will equal length headers like these OBX ones make any difference in low end torque and hp for the 2JZ-GE?
I've heard that in NA engines, all its does is lose low end torque and make the exhaust very loud and noisy. Also you may fail emissions testing.
In other words, is this mod worth the trouble?

True lol, but when there were more manufacturer of I6's, BMW's were the best of the lot in my opinion. They've been constantly refining and perfecting those engines for almost 40 years now and it's remarkable what they've done with those I6's.

Yes, V blocks are more prone to cracking under stress because they're being abused in two planes simultaneously vs. one plane for inline engines. It just means you need to do FEA on the V block and figure out where you need to be fat and where you can afford to be thin.
Awesome posts!

i seen a couple I6 bmw's but i did'nt know they were building them for so long...
i never seen any really tuned bmw's like i see with toyota/lexus.
would you say that bmw's I6 could rival toyota's in power, weight, potential, size, litres and aftermarket support to back it up.

Yeah you get the picture...although I couldn't find the one with over 1600hp, it's around there somewhere.

and here i thought 2jz's were king of the hill.
rather than pick your brain and annoy you with 20 questions, where can i read about these bmw's.
