NEW YORK, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- From an initial entry list of twenty-
eight (28) new vehicles from all over the world, a short list of ten
finalists for the third annual World Car of the Year (WCOTY) awards were
announced by the international accounting firm KPMG. The winners of the
2007 WCOTY will be unveiled during Press Preview at the upcoming New York
International Auto Show (NYIAS) on Thursday, April 5, 2007.

Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel

be eligible, the car must be in production, and sold in at least five
countries on two continents.

significance. KPMG will tabulate the vote results and the top three
finalists will be announced no later than Thursday, March 8th, 2007

of the Year. Instead, jurors will vote in those categories on March 1st.
The Top Three finalists in all awards categories will then be announced on
Thursday, March 8th.

The 2007 World Car of the Year, as well as the winners of the World
Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year titles
will all be declared on Thursday, April 5, 2007 during a press conference
to be held at the New York International Auto Show.

"Announcing the annual World Car of the Year awards at the New York
show is a fitting finale to the auto show season that begins each fall with
either the Paris or Frankfurt motor shows," said Gerry Malloy, co-chair,
WCOTY. "Next, it's on to Tokyo in alternating years. The Detroit show takes
center stage in January while Geneva claims the spotlight in March.
Finally, in April, the season reaches its exciting climax at the New York
International Auto Show."

About World Car of the Year
The World Car of the Year Awards program is initiated by, organized by,
and conducted by, automotive journalists from around the globe. A
non-profit association guided by a steering committee of journalists from
Asia, Europe, and North America administers the awards program. WCOTY is

consumer awareness of regional Car of the Year award programs as well as
the World Car of the Year.

Why are the 335i and the MazdaSpeed 3 on the "World Performance Car" list? I can see 335i on the "World Car List". Lotus Elise/Exige can replace one of these two on the "Performance Car" category easily.

most likely because the mazdaspeed 3 dominates in the compact performace class--car is very underestimated, you have to test drive it to really know too

I don't agree with the TT and the Mini being on the top 3 finalist. First gen TT and New Mini, yes. Second generation don't create much noise IMO.

Oh, wow...LS 460 up again...

Well they already won 2007 International Car of the Year (ICOTY) at NAIAS...to be in the final 3 is another great honor.

If the LS DOESN't win this, I will be very surprised. The new mini is no great leap over the old one, and the TT isn't anything particularly special either. I would think a car like the S550 would be up there with the LS, actually; oh well.

What kind of criteria do they use for this award? I'm surprised as well that the S550 isn't on the list.

The S-class was on the list last year, when it came out, along with the Lexus IS. The BMW 3-series was the winner for WCOTY then, and the Audi A6 the year before that.

We'll see if the LS does even better than top 3 finalists this year, as suggested by a number of posters on this thread and elsewhere. It's a very different comparison between the Audi TT, Lexus LS, and MINI...

I'd be surprised if LS460 doesnt win.

TT and Mini has nothing on the new LS.

They did redo their models, now with a turbocharged engine in the Cooper S model.

The last gen Cooper-S was supercharged, 168hp/163tq (in 2005). The '07 is a turbo charged direct injected 4, with 175hp/177lb/ft of torque (you get full tq at 1500rpm). The new one is larger, and drives larger. I didn't like it as much as the last gen, but it is more accessible I guess.
