Do you turn your car off when putting gas into it?
#46
Those who do not shut their car off will be seeing the Check Engine light on in the near future. OBD II cars love to flag that light when the gas cap is left off during refueling.
Oh and if you think that a running engine does not pose an explosion risk... I'll remind you that the HUGE Texas City refinery explosion was started by a truck left running (and a serious vapor cloud).

I've been doing this for the past 16 years with about 20 different cars and have yet to have a check engine lights turn on as a result of it.

A lot of cigarette smokers put out their cigarettes by throwing it to the ground and stepping on it. So if you tell the person to put out the cigarette they’re liable to throw it down and if there is a little fuel on the ground prepare for a physically moving experience.

Right, it must be true since its on the internet. Thanks, but I rather trust my 16 years of driving.
I talked to my buddy about this who works for Cadillac, he said youre right, there is a SES light that will go off, but it takes a lot more than filling up with gas, youde have to start driving around without a gas cap to trigger it.
And like I said, I have never in my life had an issue with this, my wife also doesnt shut off the car when pumping and no SES lights.

The question is, what cuases gas station fires in the first place? We all know it does happen. We coverd a few gas station fires in the news locally before. Myth Busters also did a segment on it only the myth was cell phones for the ignitions source. However, if there is an ignition source, the gas fumes can, will, and has started gas stations fires before. I remember when my dad used to work on on those large gas and oil storage tanks at the docks. They use to make sure the tank was full before working on it since an empty tank full of fumes is much more dangerous.
We do know gas fumes escape while filling up gas. You can see it and smell it. We also know there are a number of gas station fires throughout the nation every year. If you can pin point the cause of these fires you can take precausions. Almost every gas station I've been to (Obviously I haven't been to all) have warning signs to turn your engine off. Why? Maybe because they are overly cautious, or maybe because they know something.
