Always for me, just a habit and I plan to keep it that way. If you shift out of park while you're on a hill and hear/feel a thunk when the transmission is shifting out of gear....that's VERY bad(only applies to those of you who don't use the parking brake). Even on a flat surface, the car will still roll fowards/backwards a little bit. When that happens, you're putting pressure on the tranny again. My friend's mom never uses the parking brake in her 05' LS430 and now the tranny is starting to have some problems. This is on a 2 year old car with low miles!

but I don't see the point of using it on flat surface
makes the job harder for them tow truck bastards to pull it away

Word- everytime, for the transmission. I grew up in a hilly area, also though.

My transmission is fine and I only use it when Im on a hill, and I live in south Texas, not too many hills here, haha. If I had a hand brake instead of the foot brake, I would probably use it more often since it would be easier access.

Be sure to engage the parking brake first and then put the car into park. And when getting ready to move, first put the car into gear and then disengage the parking brake. This is the proper way of doing it and you will notice especially on a hill or incline that the car will jerk back less if you engage the parking brake first and then put the car into park.

Now that I drive a 6-speed I use it daily, but back when I still had my SC400, I basically only used it on hills.
