We all know Rolls/Bentley just got bought by the Germans. They might not have an excess of tech, but they have an over indulgance of everything else.

Hell, until recently their HP rating was "more than adequate". lol

Now funny but a LS 430 was chosen by an independent survey as the finest car built. I believe the Bentely had 60 exposed screws!!!

However, their is an old world craftmanship of those cars the LS/7/S cannot begin to match.

We are talking about the S/7/LS/A8......if you want to lose an arguement even worse, we can include RR and Bentley.....OF COURSE THEY ARE ABOUT EXCESS!!!

Well.. We all know ---

VW/Porsche owns Bentley, but does not really have a share in RR.

VW/Porsche also owns Lambo. Crazy what those Germans have and will do!

I call it marketing.
Yes marketing is obivously part of, but again, think using some common sense.

If Toyota engineers are asked to make a new transmission, that must be better in basically every way compared to it's predecessor, do you think they will stick with the same amount of gears, or make one with more gears and advanced technology, like jumping gears.

Jumping gears allows for flexibility, and having more gears allows a car to possess a contradiction of both high performance and high fuel economy.

And again, luxury is about excess. It's not about what you need, it's all about what people want, dream, and desire.

Some of you may not want an 8 speed tranny, and some people may not even dream of one, but I bet a lot of people desire to have a luxury car with the latest technology and gizmos.

Making the transmission better doesn't mean adding more gears. It means making it better. Like making quicker and smoother (less detectable) shifts. If the car doesn't need the extra gears, then what's the point? Easy: marketing.

You keep arguing the same points over and over.

You don't like trannies with more gears, that's fine. Fact remains, you cannot noticeably improve performance, fuel economy, offer a broader range of gear ratios all at the same time without adding more gears.

All automakers are developing trannies with more gears, so you should point your criticism not just at Toyota, but also at BMW and Mercedes, among other companies.

You can't? I'm thinking that your statement is false.

This thread is about the BMW 7 Series, and that's what we're discussing.

If your going to bish, well bish about everything that is more in cars. Not just the 8 speed tranny.

THE FACTS Are
The Lexus 8-speed:

1) Occupies the same space as the previous 6-speed
2) Uses 10% fewer parts than the 6-speed
3) Weighs less than the 6-speed
4) Better Acceleration
5) Better Fuel Economy

Saved me the trouble there 1sick I was about to lash out at the ignorance of all these new members we seem to have.

So you're saying you know better than some of the best automotive engineers in the world? If you were a powertrain engineer for an automaker, then your opinion would hold some credibility. In this case, niether you nor I know *for sure* whether they could have done it without more gears. All we can do is look at the information available to us, which is that they DID do it with more gears.

Certainly not. Just saying that I believe the marketing department plays a bigger role in the features that end up in new car, than the engineering team does.

That's the same in my company. And we're a software development company.
Of course it plays a big/bigger role, it's what sells. If it were left to engineers we'd have a bare bones machine. Sometimes we get those.
