This turned into a funny tread. Next people will say Luxury cars shouldn't have manual transmissions Heck, Luxury manufacturers shouldn't be selling trucks or SUV's either Having options is good. It is not like you can't get real leather in the 3 series. So what if you have to pay for it or add on the premium package. Pretty much every luxury car you have to either pay extra for certain things or you have to add on complete packages just to get one item you want. That is what luxury is. Having more options.
The article was BMW owners being "FOOLED" into thinking their car had real leather. The fact is nobody is being fooled. It is a choice to either have the real leather or the leatherette.

Quite simple. If you have a luxury car, why get "fake leather" much like why get "fake wood"??? And yes fake aluminum sucks too. However fake leather, is a crime, IMO.
Makes no sense to me at all but it feeds into people's ego's that its not cloth and people won't notice that they are sitting on plastic.
Clearly all companies use leatherette on the sides, backs of seats etc. Outside $100k plus cars, there is fake leather used in cars.
Fake leather on the actual seat my bottom touches.....I might as well wear fake leather coats and instead of Via Spiga's wear some payless shoes that are made from the same plastic garbage bags are made of b/c it looks the same and oh, it doesn't smell like leather and it doesn't cost $200 bucks and I don't have to maintain it.

I would never wear a fake leather jacket though. That just ain't cool.

One word - YIKES.
I also couldn't believe that in my friend's 2003 Grand Prix GTP sedan that it only had a driver's side heated seat, no other seats! What a POS!

People give BMW for having leatherette in their "luxury" cars as standard while Lexus offers cloth as standard . When you see a "luxury" car with leatherette, you pay no attention because you don't know if it's real leather or leatherette. But when you see a "luxury" car with cloth... you go... WFT..

They still do. Standard for the C is leatherette just like the 3, but unlike the 3, the middle is real leather and the sides are leatherette.

I have a '93 SC400 and the leather Lexus put in there is some of the best.
It's really thick and natural looking and I don't have any splits after 14 years and 234,000 miles. It's funny looking through the windows of Cadillacs and Lincolns (same age as my car) and seeing the ultra thin "leather" torn to shreds.
As far as BMW "leather", I can tell its fake from a mile away.
