The 7speed from Mercedes can't handle that much power. Even the 5speed can't. The SL65 engine can make more than 1200lb-ft torque, it's detuned to about 800 for reliability (tranny) reasons.

The RENNtech guys have software they are testing to unleash all 1200lb-ft torque but as they run the car through the dyno, the transmission just slips and sits in neutral. That's power.

If anyone say Topgear a few hours ago, they tested a Brabus SL55 bored out with some goodies, that car had enough torque as it was (I think it was a base SL55 modded, they said bored to 6.3L).

yup, totally agree. i would probably choose the sl55 or sl600 over the m6. m6 is a good sport (track) car, but for every day driving the sl is better imho. the sl65 is very nice and tons of bragging rights, but for 180k, i would be looking at some other cars instead

Yes, but how do you choose between the 55 and the 600?

SL55 is more tightly tuned, drives sportier & rides stiffer, & is also lower. But the interior materials of the SL600 is better(premium leather, alcantra lining, wood & leather steering wheel etc.) & comes standard with more extra's . . . it's personal preference.
I think the SL55 holds it's value better than the SL600 though. Those V12 mercedes' depreciate quite quickly.

andrew brought up some very good points on the depreciation. if money is no factor, i will probably go with the s600, the interior is quite a bit nicer, and imho the suspension of the sl is quite stiff already, so s55 (haven't driven it yet) i imagine would be even stiffer?

The SL600 is a no brainer. When you're dealing with a pig, it's not like a few pounds here and there make a difference.
At least with the SL600, you can chip it and get mad hp. 10 sec 1/4mi!

You would have to do more than chip it to get into the 10's. A chipped SL65 would have a hard time doing that. To some one elses comment on the 65 not being very different than a SL 600. All that I can say is do your home work. The AMG's are more than some badges and 4 tailpipes; the chassis is tuned different, the exhaust is different, the brakes are different and naturally the engines are totally different--- in one word different. And one other thing before you pass judgement drive any of the AMG's you will be surprised at how any of the pigs drive and most of all how docile they can be when driven sensibly but that is not easy to do when you have all of those controllable ponies at you beckoned call.

I thought the SL was a 5.5 to 6.5 or 6.3, one of those.

and the SL65 is just 6L

kinda like AMD naming their processors 3200+ when they are like 2GHz

doesnt matter what the name is, the engine produces way more than enuf power
lol

theres really no point in brabus tuning the SL65...
unless they invent some super sticky road tires

Oops, yeah the SL65 is a 6L engine.

AMD's method is actually different, they were just trying to keep up with the Intel P4 stuff.

I think this is a really stupid comparision... I'm not trying to favour BMW because i don't really like the M6 that much at all, but i do find that it's somewhat an unfair comparision. Why didn't they compare the SL55 and the M6... it would have been more even.
