I want to buy a VW diesel car - used more likely than new, and am looking for recommendations on what to look out for, what kinds of repairs to expect and what specific models to avoid.

I don't have a preference for the model if it has a good track record.

Main reason why I want to get a diesel car is the savings in fuel (planning on getting rid of the Maxima SE for a diesel car) , so set me straight if my expectations are off base please.

Right now VW Canada has a very attractive lease offer on a brand new Jetta TDI and I want to weigh this against getting used (more affordable obviously) versus headaches with buying used.

Please bring it on!

Where can I see reliability ratings on these cars? I don't have a subscription to Consumer reports.
