Default Gas prices back on the road to $3??

Gas costs back on road to $3
Eric Morath / The Detroit News

The steady climb to higher spring gasoline prices is under way and a repeat of last year's $3 a gallon is a strong possibility.

The average price for a gallon of regular in Metro Detroit reached $2.28 Monday, according AAA Michigan. That's up 38 cents from a month ago and the highest price at the pump since Dec. 4.

Statewide, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.30.

Pump prices are more than a dime higher than at this time last year, fueling concerns that Michigan drivers again could soon pay $3 a gallon -- as they have the past two summers.

"Things might stay stable for a week," said AAA spokesman Jim Rink, noting prices are only up 3 cents from a week ago. "But once we get into March, prices will go up and hit a peak in late May."

Rink said it's not a certainty that prices will top three bucks, but the fact they reached that level the past two years shows the market can sustain that price during the summer driving season.

The higher cost to make summer fuel, higher gas demand and speculators -- those who buy and sell oil as an investment -- push pump prices higher during the spring months, Rink said.

Over the past 4 days or so, the BP station I use has gone from $2.19 to $2.29 to $2.39 and today it's $2.45 for regular unleaded. It's getting so I don't want to drive past the place!

It's already $3/gallon here for Super Unleaded.

Of course, Cali has a bunch of extra taxes & crap added-on.

Enjoy your Chevy Suburban!

This was well expected.

We're no longer living in a world of $1.50/gl gasoline. With recent barrel prices, I doubt that we'll ever see it that low ever again.

A recent fire at an Exxon site, as well as a CN rail strike has driven up gas prices in Ontario to $0.95cad a litre.

Oh well... we have to drive!!!

This is crazy as usual. I do make a lot of drives from NorCal to SoCal. I'll probably be flying more instead of driving. I love to drive but at the same time I don't want it to cost a fortune...

Here in ND the price was running around $1.99 to $2.04 a gal for regular unlead in January. Grand Forks, ND which sees a lot of Canadian shoppers was even down to $1.89. About the 1st of Feb. the price jumped to $2.09 and every few days has jumped another $.05 and just last night changed to $2.34. The mid-grade stuff usually runs $.05 more than unleaded and the premium level is usually $.10 higher, but in some areas will be $.15 to $.20 higher. Here in Jamestown, the current prices are $2.34 for unleaded, $2.39 for mid-grade (usually has 10% ethanol) and $2.44 for premium, Fargo is $2.29 for unleaded, $2.34 for mid-grade and $2.44 for premium.

It looks to be another summer of $3.00 gas and that really doesn't surprise me. Also looks like the sale of big SUV will be slowing even more.

I'm all for it. Time for people to reconsider their SUV purchases again, and decide if it's really necessary.

WTF?? Exxon alone made like $36 BILLIONS in profit last year or the year before I forget... seems like they are going to have another record year if they are going with this pace... damn those greedy bastards. When are they going to stop? I am to blame partly too by supporting them indirectly since I love driving. The worse part is most of my car take premium...

If Exxon wasn't as profitable as they are today... you might not have ANY gasoline to put in your vehicles. Think about R&D, exploration, etc...

No and no ... and I WISH!

I have just come to the realization that gasoline is a necessity for me, and when the prices go up, I need to accommodate accordingly. As long as there is gasoline to put in my vehicle, I'm good!
