Next Generation C7 Corvette gets 700HP
Friday 23 February 2007
General Motors’ VP of global product development Jim Queen has spilled the beans on one of GM’s most crucial future models. In an interview with Motor Trend, Queen said the next-generation C7 Corvette will retain a naturally aspirated V8 engine but will develop up to 700hp in flagship form. Also, rumors of an AWD version are said to be false.
The major focus of the project will be to increase the efficiency of the drivetrain. “We’re working hard to get that power onto the pavement,” Queen said, adding that weight and weight distribution are the keys. Most of GM’s upcoming large RWD cars are moving to its new Zeta architecture, however, the new Corvette and its Cadillac XLR sibling will be based on a unique platform.

I'm sure we are going to get to a point where normal Joe-Schmo cars are going to come with 1000+ hp...
11 years ago, 432 hp was enough for the Ferrari Testarosa... now, that's nowhere NEAR enough considering you can buy an Audi RS4 for about half as much as what a Testarosa would have cost you back in the day and get 420hp out of it.
Let's just hope that they make these things driveable... a lot of people have a hard time handling their 165hp Civics, let alone a 700+hp rocket.

EV ftw!!!
505 HP is not enough.
I want a car to have enough hp to allow me to take-off with jet-propulsion power into outer space........

The supercharged LS9 V8 in the C6 Blue Devil is already going to put out somewhere between 600 and 650 horsepower... so when the 7th gen comes out it's really not much of a stretch to assume it could just another 50 to 100hp.
Oh and I think horsepower is staying somewhat reasonable because the cars are able to handle it - between improved suspension, safety features, and especially huge improvements in stability and traction control in the last decade... as long as the driver is mature enough, that kind of power can safely be put to use, whereas in a car 15 years ago you'd probably never even be able to floor it without running off the road.
I was talking to a guy that owned an LT1 Camaro - 275 horsepower stock... runs maybe 14.0 @ 100 at best, which today the average V6 4 door sedan will come close enough to. But this same guy also owns a 400hp LS2 Corvette. He said in some ways the Camaro feels faster because it also feels.... 'dangerous' is the way he put it. Hit the gas and it feels like the car is about to burst at the seems and fishtail down the road. It's loud, rough, and not at all confidence inspiring - feels like it could kill you with one false move.
The C6 vette on the other hand is about 1.5 to 2 seconds faster in the 1/4-mile due to being lighter and having 125 more ponies... yet he says you feel a lot more stable and secure driving it... like you'd have to TRY to mess it up.

its becoming the same war of hp thats going on in Germany.....one day they'll realise that a 350hp vehicle with proper suspension and attributes is just as good to a 700hp that cant hold traction for nothing--i do like the fact that they are making it though
going from stop light to stop lgiht the fastest must be great!
