Report: General Motors, Ford, Chrysler sales likely down again in February

The Detroit News

Wednesday, February 28, 2007

General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co., the biggest U.S. automakers, may say U.S. sales fell in February as they worked to wean themselves from dependence on rental-car companies, Bloomberg News reported today.

Sales may drop 7 percent from a year earlier for GM and 20 percent for Ford, based on the average estimates of 28 analysts and economists surveyed by Bloomberg. DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler unit probably will say sales fell 8 percent after a February 2006 gain.

"They are making the right moves and getting away from this model where you had to bleed surplus production into the rental business," said Jim Sanfilippo, an analyst at Automotive Marketing Consultants in Bloomfield Hills.

The U.S. automakers, which report sales Thursday, are betting they can restore profit by cutting discounted sales to so-called fleet buyers. Fewer sales to rental-car companies and other business customers probably led to market-share losses as more consumers picked Asian brands led by Toyota Motor Corp.

Toyota's U.S. sales may have risen about 10 percent this month while Honda Motor Co., Japan's second-largest automaker, may have gained about 18 percent, Banc of America Securities analyst Ronald Tadross in New York said in a Feb. 22 note.

Default Hyundai Sets Record February With 34,500 Sales

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America
today reported its best February ever with sales of 34,500 vehicles. Sales

and finance options on Sonata and Santa Fe."

Advantage, America's Best Warranty. Hyundai buyers are protected by a
10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile
