How can you guys afford to mod???

Hmm interesting, I guess if it's your passion you'll never get tired of it. My brother is almost 30 and he told me that he doesnt have time to swirve away from potholes and slow down for bumps. So he gave up on modding (he used to drive a modded C4S and E-Class) and bought a Range Rover.

I'm at the point where I'm already wanting to stop modding. Although i'm younger than most of you, I feel like modding is becoming a waste of money. I'm spending more than I should and when I look back, i have buyer's remorse.

I've always seen it as a huge waste of money, especially when you're older and you have more money to spend up front. It might make sense for a kid to spend $10000 on a car, then spend another $10000 over the course of a year or two to soup it up, because he probably doesn't have $20000 to spend on a better car up front. But when you're older, you start to realize that if you spent that extra $10000 you spent on rims, a system, a bodykit, exhaust and intake, etc. you could have just bought a much better car to start with

I agree with Ck6speed, i hate when people say that you outgrow modfying cars. If you truly love cars and modifying them you NEVER grow out of it. I used to know this guy in my highschool and his dad was in his mid 50's was the president of a major aftermarket company and loved cars and modfying them ever since he was old enough to drive. If you lived here in so cal makes you wonder where people get $$$ for their cars but somehow they do.

Now that I'm older and my son actually can understand and help me, I find it even more enjoyable modding cars with my son. He seems to enjoy helping. Some of my best memories as a teenager/early 20s youngster is when my dad used to complain to me about how lowering my car or adding a stereo system is a waste of money, all while actually helping me do it I learned a lot from him and I don't really remember what exactly he would complain about, but I do remember him teaching me how to use the tools, wire up electrical and basically just working on my car together.
There are always better ways to spend money, but if you enjoy what you are spending your money on than I don't feel it is a waste of time.

Easy answer, I can't afford to spend money on mods.
I'm 20 years old (turning 21 in two months), I'm a junior at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. I own a 94 SC400. The only few mods I've done are: intake snorkel removal (free) and cluster back lighting.
I don't even plan to do anything to the car anymore until I'm very financially stable. And even than I'm leaning more of buying a new car when I graduate and maybe just maybe keeping the SC for a project car. The SC needs a lot of work to make it look even stock. There's quite a bit of body damage, the leather on the interior is splitting because of it's age and the engine is clocked at around 240k miles.
I'm just trying to save enough money to live comfortably. I can't even begin to think about any large purchases right now. I was about to jump in for the leatherseats.com group buy but I thought to myself "you can afford this but, you should probably save your money."
I work two jobs. While I'm not in classes (Wentworth has a co-op program during some semesters we work in the field) I work at my office job, a software development company. And I work as a pizza delivery guy on weekends. Between the two jobs I work around 60-70 hours a week. Even with both jobs (both fairly good paying) I don't have extra scratch to mod. Any extra money I get (after paying off all bills) goes into my savings account which is meant only for emergency purposes/saving for a big purchase like a new car.
To summarize, it's all in the person's lifestyle. While I guess I could say I could afford to mod, it's just that I can't bring myself to spend my money when there's other things I should worry about first.
