Can someone give me some more background on this styling?
I'd like to know where it came from and why.
It makes me think 80's with the color schemes. I half expect these things to transform into robots.

The styling is called VIP pronounced "Bippu"
I remember reading an article about that kinda styling.
There are two ways they sway:
One was with the Techno music crowd. They had all the accessories like mirror hangers, extra mirrors, n whatever else you would deem over the top and unnecessary. Oh and Flashy pastel colors.
The other was the Yakuza style which was the big truck front body kits with big wheels and usually black paint. They have this thing with really big flairy exhausts. Just like the motorcycles (cruisers) where they added crazy big a$$ exhausts that flared upwards like it came out of a comic book.
here's a link to another forum: http://forums.importtuner.com/70/106...yle/index.html
Edit - They have the link to the original article, I believe, that I read a while back.
I remember another article pointing out the other end of the spectrum with the techno cars.
They used the same luxury cars as the Yakuza tho. ie Toyota Celsior a.k.a. Lexus LS400

In case you guys run in to these cars in Japan, don't mess with them, they are Yakuzaaaaaa!! gangsters...
the cars in the Video are little over done on the paint jobs, but they are gangster cars in Japan... Cultural things, just hope our American people won't copy these JDM Styles..
