Funny how one prototype high performance car burns up during testing and so many here use it to put down Audi or German engineering in general, or feel superior about Lexus. As has been pointed out, who knows what happens during most Lexus testing. Hopefully nothing as dramatic as this, but who knows.
Anyone who pushes the limits has setbacks and unexpected results.
In a few years we'll see Chinese cars on the Ring too.

Quite a few Toyotas caught on fire here:
Seriously, let's not blow a prototype out of proportion.

Toyota plant suspends Prius production after fire
11.21.2005, 11:15 PM
TOKYO (AFX) - Toyota Motor Corp said one of its plants in central Japan has been forced to halt production of the Prius hybrid and other popular vehicles for at least a week after a fire damaged an assembly line.
Toyota Auto Body normally assembles about 1,000 finished vehicles a day at the Fujimatsu Factory, about one-quarter of which are Prius gas-electric hybrids.
After the blaze which broke out late on Monday, the company is assessing whether the halt will cause a delay in vehicle supply, a Toyota spokeswoman said.
'We have suspended production, except for some parts to be supplied to other factories,' she said, adding that it would take 'at least a week' to resume production.

People, this is a PROTOTYPE. How do we know the engineers weren't experimenting with different materials, parts, settings, or parameters in this car? Plus, this test vehicle may very well have been more beaten to death on a track than most production R8's will ever be.

Though I find a humorous correlation between this prototype catching fire and my 2 Audi Turbos that also caught fire (in the 80's) this is still a prototype. Some will bash it, some will pretend to have some sense of neutrality, some will spend hours on Google trying to find a counter point as listed above, and others care less. Welcome to the Web. This describes about 90% of the threads on car specific forums.
As I do not intend to purchase an Audi at any time in the future, this has no effect on me in anyhow. Now if a production version burns like mine did, then Houston ,Audi has a problem
