Ford Motor Company Reports April U.S. Sales
-- Ford Motor Company's U.S. sales in April were 228,623, down 13 percent
from a year ago. -- New crossovers help Ford increase its share in the
industry's fastest- growing category. -- Sales of the Ford Edge crossover
were 9,134, and Lincoln MKX sales were 2,901. -- Land Rover sales rose 13
percent, as all-new LR2 debuts.
DEARBORN, Mich., May 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ford Motor Company's
(NYSE: F) April U.S. sales totaled 228,623, down 13 percent compared with a
year ago.
"With April behind us, we remain focused on getting the word out about
the strength of our new products, and our marketing offensive is moving
into high gear," said Mark Fields, Ford's President of The Americas.
"Customers are responding very positively to our new 'Ford Challenge' ads
that pit Ford vehicles against the best of the competition, so we're
accelerating our plans."
Today, Ford begins airing two new F-Series truck ads starring Mike
Rowe, creator and star of the Discovery Channel's hit show "Dirty Jobs."
The ads demonstrate the clear advantages of Ford Tough trucks in safety,
strength and capability.
Ford's internal data show that the Ford Challenge campaign has
generated a strong response in product favorability, purchase consideration
and sales. Following the start of the successful "Fusion Challenge" ads in
January, the Ford Fusion posted double-digit sales increases throughout the
first quarter. Strong Crossover Growth Continues
Although April sales for most products were lower than a year ago, new
crossover utilities helped Ford increase its share of the industry's
fastest growing category. Ford Edge sales were 9,134, and Lincoln MKX sales
were 2,901. In addition, Land Rover introduced its first crossover utility,
the LR2, and first month sales were 1,302. Total Ford Motor Company
crossover sales were 28 percent higher than a year ago during April.
"The success of our newest products - Ford Fusion, Edge, Lincoln MKX,
Ford Super Duty and Ford Expedition - gives us encouragement that we're
creating the products our customers really want, and we're beginning to
stabilize our retail market share," Fields said.
"Three years ago, 70 percent of new Ford Motor Company vehicles sold in
the U.S. were trucks and traditional SUVs. Today, the balance is nearly 50
percent cars and crossovers, and 50 percent trucks and SUVs," Fields
explained. "We will continue to introduce new crossovers and even more
small cars in the U.S., as they represent the consumer growth segments
going forward."

Chrysler Group's April 2007 U.S. Sales Rise 2 Percent
-- Jeep(R) brand up 29 percent led by Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Patriot
-- Chrysler and Dodge Minivans up 10 percent with momentum from "National
Minivan Month" in April
-- Five-Star crash-rated Dodge Ram pick up rises 2 percent in competitive
segment
-- Chrysler Sebring Sedan rises 56 percent
-- Inventory down by 18 percent and more than 100,000 units
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Chrysler Group
reported sales for April 2007 of 193,104 units; up 2 percent compared to
April 2006 with 190,095. All sales figures are reported unadjusted.
"Chrysler Group increased sales in April based on a solid retail
performance - despite two less selling days than in the previous year and a
challenging market environment," said Steven Landry, Executive Vice
President - NAFTA Sales, Global Marketing, Service and Parts. "Driven by
the continuously strong Jeep Wrangler and the new Jeep Patriot, sales for
the Jeep brand were up significantly by 29 percent."
Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited posted sales of 10,776 units, up
75 percent compared to April 2006 with 6,154 units. The Jeep Patriot
continued to gain momentum and finished April with sales of 2,904 units, up
38 percent from March 2007. The vehicle is one of Chrysler Group's recently
introduced fuel- efficient offerings that achieve 30 miles per gallon or
better in highway driving.
Driven by Chrysler Group's "National Minivan Month" in April, sales of
the Chrysler Town & Country increased 24 percent compared to the previous
year and posted sales of 15,701 units. Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan
finished the month with an increase of 2 percent compared to April 2006 and
sales of 23,095 units.
The Dodge Ram pick up truck increased year-over-year sales by 2 percent
with sales of 31,503 units in a highly competitive segment and on the heels
of an already successful first quarter.
The Chrysler Sebring Sedan posted sales of 6,111 units in April, up 56
percent compared to the previous year. The all-new Chrysler Sebring
Convertible started with more than 1,400 units into its first month of
availability. The redesigned Sebring Convertible offers what no other
convertible has offered before - three automatically latching convertible
top options: vinyl, cloth and a body-color painted steel retractable hard
top, all of which can be retracted with a push of a button on the key fob.
With the continued pressure on gas prices Chrysler Group's incentives
in May will focus on the company's full line of cars and small and compact
SUVs with the launch of the 'Maximize Your Miles' program. The program will
communicate the vehicle's fuel economy message across all three Chrysler
Group brands. A key part of it will be low rate finance and additional
bonus cash which will give customers a great package.
Chrysler Group finished the month with 482,786 units of inventory, or a
60-day supply. Inventory is down by 18 percent compared to April 2006 when
it was at 586,263 units.

Edmunds.com Reports True Cost of Incentives for April
Edmunds.com Reports True Cost of Incentives for April: Automotive Incentives Spending Down Five Percent from March
SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, estimated today that the average automotive manufacturer incentive in the U.S. was $2,342 per vehicle sold in April 2007, down $132, or 5.3 percent, from March 2007, and up $45, or 1.96 percent, from April 2006.
Edmunds.com's monthly True Cost of IncentivesSM (TCISM) report takes into account all automakers' various U.S. incentives programs, including subvented interest rates and lease programs, as well as cash rebates to consumers and dealers. To ensure the greatest possible accuracy, Edmunds.com bases its calculations on sales volume, including the mix of vehicle makes and models for each month, as well as on the proportion of vehicles for which each type of incentive was used.
"April was a terrible sales month largely due to reduced fleet sales. Additionally, slow retail sales may be partially attributed to the five percent drop in incentives spending compared to March," stated Jesse Toprak, Executive Director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "Consumers are conditioned to wait for good deals, and in the past the wait typically pays off. As automakers attempt to move away from generous incentives programs, shoppers may take a wait-and-see attitude."
According to Edmunds.com, combined incentives spending for domestic manufacturers averaged $3,147 per vehicle sold in April 2007, down from $3,301 in March 2007. From March to April, European automakers decreased incentives spending by $25 to $3,139 per vehicle sold; Japanese automakers decreased incentives spending by $105 to $1,192 per vehicle sold; and Korean automakers decreased incentives spending by $249 to $1,750 per vehicle sold.
In April, the industry's aggregate incentive spending is estimated to have totaled approximately $3.0 billion, down from $3.8 billion in March. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors spent an aggregate of $2.1 billion, or 68.4 percent of the total; Japanese manufacturers spent $576 million, or 19 percent; European manufacturers spent $277 million, or 9 percent; and Korean manufacturers spent $106 million, or 3.5 percent.
Edmunds' AutoObserver.com has learned that in April U.S. consumer sentiment fell to a seven-month low, according to the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers. “It was the third straight monthly fall in the index,” observed AutoObserver.com Senior Editor Michelle Krebs. “The survey showed increased inflation expectations among consumers, who also fretted over rising gasoline prices and troubles in the housing market.”
Among vehicle segments, large cars had the highest average incentives, $3,662 per vehicle sold, followed by minivans at $3,556. Sport cars had the lowest average incentives per vehicle sold, $787, followed by compact cars at $1,101. Analysis of incentives expenditures as a percentage of average sticker price for each segment shows large cars averaged the highest, 13.2 percent, followed by minivans at 12.8 percent of sticker price. Sport cars averaged the lowest, 2.8 percent, followed by luxury sports cars at 3.2 percent of sticker price.
Comparing all brands, in April Mini spent the least, virtually nothing, followed by Scion at $84 per vehicle sold. At the other end of the spectrum, Cadillac spent the most, $7,295, followed by Saab at $5,273 per vehicle sold. Relative to their vehicle prices, Chrysler and Mercury spent the most, 16.14 percent and 16.1 percent of sticker price, respectively, while Mini spent essentially nothing and Scion spent just 0.5 percent.
About Edmunds.com True Cost of IncentivesSM(TCISM)
Edmunds.com's TCISM is a comprehensive monthly report that measures automobile manufacturers' cost of incentives on vehicles sold in the United States. These costs are reported on a per vehicle basis for the industry as a whole, for each manufacturer, for each make sold by each manufacturer and for each model of each make. TCI covers all aspects of manufacturers' various incentives programs (except volume and similar bonus programs), including dealer cash, manufacturer rebates and consumer savings from subvented APR and lease programs (including subvented lease residual values used in manufacturer leasing programs). Data for the industry, the manufacturers and the makes are derived using weighted averages and are based on actual monthly sales and financing activity.

April Auto Sales: Porsche

ATLANTA — Porsche Cars North America Inc. on Tuesday said April sales in the U.S. declined on lower volumes of its most popular sports cars, the Boxster, Cayman and 911.
Sales fell 9.8 percent to 3,015 from 3,341 in April last year.
Porsche's Boxster and Cayman models saw weaker volume in April of 809 vehicles versus 1,177 a year ago. The 911 line of sports cars, including the Carrera and Cabriolet, posted sales volume of 1,213, down from 1,229.
Adjusting for two fewer selling days last month compared with a year ago, sales slipped a more modest 2.2 percent.
So far this year, Porsche has sold 11,244 autos in the U.S., compared with 12,458 in the same period last year. The 2007 and 2006 year-to-date periods include the same number of selling days.
The company's German parent, Porsche AG, has offered to buy Volkswagen AG for about $137.59 per share, below the current market price. Porsche was required to bid for the company after purchasing more than 30 percent of VW, Europe's largest carmaker by sales.
