2012 Porsche 928 (GT Coupe) Preview

Posted on 05.7.2007 14:30 by Simona Alina

Porsche ended the production of the 928 in 1995, after 18 years of production. After more than 10 years, they will bring the 928 back to life, with a new GT Coupe model based on the Panamera platform. With the new 928, Porsche wants to take on cars such as BMW M6, Jaguar XKR, Aston-Martin DB9, and Mercedes CL-class.

The new front-engined coupe will share at least 60% of all parts with the Panamera, including the platform, the engines, transmissions and suspension corner modules. A specific fine-tuning of the common components, a different electronic mapping and different suspension spring and damping values will ensure that the Panamera and the GT Coupe will be two distinct vehicles with characters appropriated for their destinations.

Comparing to the Panamera, the 928 GT Coupe will have a shorter wheelbase and will loose some weights. This will make it sportier than the sedan.

The 928 GT Coupe will be powered by the same engines used in the Panamera. The normally aspirated and turbocharged V8 (used in the Cayenne) will be the first options. The V8 will rank between 4 and 6 liters of displacement and producing power values amid 300 and 650 bhp. Also the GT Coupe will use the 5.7 litre V10 engine producing 605 hp used in the Carrera GT.

The Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) technology first used in the Cayenne will be also used in the GT Coupe. This technology lowers the fuel consumption of individual models by over eight percent (NEDC). In real driving conditions, savings of up to 15 percent are possible.

Also from the Panamera, the new Coupe will borrow the transmission choices: a six-speed manual will come as standard, and a seven-speed automatic, dual-clutch DSG will also be available. All the technologies being borrowed from the Panamera, Porsche would have to use something from the old 928, to justify the name. This will be the rear-wheel drive system, with a transaxle helping to balance weight distribution.

The 2012 928 GT Coupe will have a top speed of 198 mph -est- (the V10 version) and will make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in about 3.8 seconds.

The 928 GT Coupe will be unveiled sometime in 2011 and will go on sale in 2012. Being a front-engined coupe and also a GT model, it is expected the new 928 GT Coupe to compete with luxury models from the market like the 599 Fiorano and Aston Martin. This will make the 2012 928 an expensive model, with prices starting from $200.000.

The only car close to the price of that from its list of competitors if the Aston Martin. This car is like $110k more than the 6 series and about $90k more than even an M6. Although, it does seem like it will out perform any its competition.

Since they said it would be "$200.000" I"m thinking this report is from another country since nobody uses a '.' instead of a ',' to separate digits in America. So it's probably not $200,000USD

Judging by the sketches alone, I think it looks alright.

Should be the perfect time to make something that is totally different and not one that looks like an updated 1980's model IMO. Getting a little tired of the sameness, but damn I still like Porsche.

I've always love the 928 - the Only V8 Porsche and I've seen these types of Pics (early) drawing for years now.. They need to get with it and stop teasing the public..

Okay so they brought back the old headlights and now they are going to do the same with the tail light? I am not feeling it.
