Lightbulb Lexus LS 600h L to Displace Century As Japan’s Priciest Auto

http://news.windingroad.com/countrie...priciest-auto/

When Lexus launches the new LS600hl in Tokyo on May 17, this V-8 hybrid super sedan is set to carry a formidable ¥15.1 million sticker (equal to $125,833), according to Japan’s Nikkan Kyogo Shimbun business paper.

If that’s the case, then it will handily displace the Toyota Century at ¥11.13 million (or $92,750) as Japan’s most expensive home-brewed car. The Century has long been Japan’s top, super conservative, chauffeur-driven limo and - little known fact - the latest version, born in 1997, is unique in that it’s Japan’s only V-12 powered production car.
Not to get fellow U.S. owners overly jealous...but the Japan release date is in 2 weeks.

They're very different cars though.

One is a limo; big, powerful, and to be driven in. The other is a typical sedan (albeit full of advanced technology).

It's like comparing a Maybach to a Rolls. They're both expensive, but they provide different functions.

I thought Maybach and Rolls were both huge limos?

They are.
It's just the Rolls is more classy.

Whose ever heard of a Maybach anyways.

The Century is only a 5.0 litre V12 with 280 hp, not I would described as powerful but with Japan's roads, may be sufficient for a mostly chauffeur driven car. :

I think the LS600hL with exec. package is meant more to be driven in as well, & should replace the Century as Japan's most expensive, top luxury sedan.

I am still hoping they would develop a new Lexus super lux. V12 sedan to replace the Century soon.

^^
Hehe maybe the Lexus super-lux V12 sedan can come in 2 body styles, or rather a main L-finesse model and a specialized 'old style' Century body kit!

Century isn't 280hp, its just following that old Japanese law, when all cars were spec'd at 280hp maximum, but in reality had quite a bit more (Supra TT, Skyline, NSX to name a few).

the v12 may be a bit weak in hp but it's got 400+ lb-ft of torque which is more than enough for Japanese roads.

Slightly OT, but what's the deal with the LS 600h L, GS 430 naming scheme? I thought it was LS600hL, GS430, etc.

With or without spaces, either works...

I believe when you look at the back end of our cars it's ES 300, LS 460, LS 600h L, etc. The spaces are there and they matter...

Correct. That "280HP" is just an arbitrary rating the Century's V12 gets based on the old "gentleman's" agreement between Japanese automakers. That V12 makes some prodigious torque down low, and HP is more in the mid 300s range. Top Secret of Japan is currently tuning the very same V12 from the Century in it's latest Supra creation to 1000HP.

As for the LS600hL, not surprised it's now the most expensive Japanese car, but it will never replace the Century.
