It is a car of choice for the famous and the eco-friendly. But the Toyota Prius is much more than a fashion statement.
The hybrid green car, which can run on petrol and electricity, has just been named the most satisfying car to own in a poll of motorists.
Showrooms have reported exceptional demand for the Prius, which is priced from £17,780, especially in London, where there is a two-month waiting list. The car is exempt from the £8-a-day congestion charge.
This is the first time the Japanese family car has been included in the annual league table of British motorists' satisfaction.
Nine of the top 12 places were taken by Japanese models - either those belonging to Toyota, its luxury arm Lexus or rival Honda.
First place was shared by the Lexus IS and the Prius. Both scored 86.8 per cent against an industry average of 79 per cent.
The Skoda was the only European manufacturer to make the top 12. Three of its cars ranked in the leading dozen.
Hollywood actors who use the Prius include Leonardo diCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Jane Fonda, Harrison-Ford and Meryl Streep. In Britain, it is favoured by Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and the Liverpool footballer Harry Kewell. The late DJ John Peel also drove one.
The Prius switches between petrol and electric power to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas blamed for global warming. With its electric motor and petrol engine, it averages about 65.7miles per gallon.
Worst ranked out of 113 cars, was the Smart Roadster, followed by the Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager - a past favourite.
The poll was complied by global quality experts J.D Power in association with What Car? magazine.
It was based on feedback from motorists after two years of ownership-Steve Fowler, editor of What Car?, said, "The Toyota Prius clearly demonstrates that car owners think green is good.
"We know there's an increase in consumer interest in environmentallyfriendly cars here in the UK, and with the Prius topping the model rankings in the 2007 study, we may be seeing a trend emerging."

Lexus’ achievement for seven consecutive J.D. Power and Associates Gold Award remains unmatched by any other auto maker. In all, Lexus and Toyota models claimed five of the top 10 model rankings.
The results of the 2007 J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction index study show Lexus unchallenged in its number one position for the seventh year in a row. It has now claimed the coveted Gold Award every year since it became eligible for consideration.
It is an achievement that is unmatched by any other car manufacturer in J.D. Power CSI reports, anywhere in the world.
Scoring 862 points out of a possible 1,000, Lexus led the field by a 17-point margin and was 46 points ahead among the premium sector brands. It was the highest scoring brand in three of the four study categories: vehicle quality/reliability, service satisfaction and vehicle appeal.
As well as retaining the top manufacturer title, Lexus also claimed the highest result for an individual model. The IS sports saloon took top spot for the second year running, sharing the laurels with its Toyota group stablemate, the Toyota Prius.
The RX was placed fourth overall, making it by far the highest-rated SUV, 20 points clear of its closest rival. In all, Lexus and Toyota models claimed five of the top 10 model rankings. The results were produced from thousands of survey questionnaires completed by owners of cars registered between September 2005 and August 2006.
Steve Settle, Director of Lexus, said: “The message from these results is clear: the quality of our products and our service to our customers have no equal. In seven years, none of our competitors has managed to improve its performance to a level where it matches, let alone exceeds the all-round rewards of Lexus ownership.
“We are extremely proud of what has been achieved by Lexus GB and by our network of Lexus Centres, and are determined that we will continue to set the highest standards for customer satisfaction the UK motor industry.”
Lexus’ reputation will be enhanced further this summer with the launch of the LS 600h, a new flagship for the range, featuring the latest development of Lexus Hybrid Drive.
