BMW got complaints from the American auto press and some X3 owners about the harshness of the original X3's ride......and softened the underpinnings somewhat, especially for the U.S. versions.
In SportDrive, shifts were a tiny bit more noticeable than full-automatic mode, which of course is more or less normal, but less harsh than with the SMT.....another source of owner complaints. The SMT, to my knowledge, is not offered with X3's, at least in the American market.
I meant sport drive in automatic mode. Similar to ect pwr in Lexus

OK...I got you. It felt pretty much the way you would expect it to....slightly higher shift points and slightly crisper shifting.

SMT is kind of a generic term to refer to any type of sequential manual transmission.

DSG, DCG, SMG, and others are all types of SMTs.

BUT to confuse the issue even more, Toyota uses the term "Toyota SMT" for a design they specifically designed for the MR2 and possible other vehicles of theirs in the future.

SMG is BMW's proprietary/trademarked design and term and it works on an electrohydraulic system.

So BMW's SMG is one of many types of SMTs, and Toyota's SMT is also a type of SMT.

TMDA!!! (not to be confused with Time Division Multiplex Access)
Too many damn acronyms!
