If Max Mosley gets his way, Formula One will switch to V6 engines in 2011.
The 2.2 litre turbo-charged formula, with power plants limited to just 10,000 rpm and running on biofuel, was set out by the FIA President in a letter to manufacturers, according to the magazine F1 Racing.
The radical proposal, to make F1 technology more cost-efficient, road relevant and environmentally friendly, will also involve single engines being used for a minimum of five Grand Prix, compared with the current two.
Also proposed for the 2011-2014 regulations are four-wheel drive, power-boost buttons and 'severely constrained' aerodynamics, such as the limitation of wind tunnel use, and the document was also sent to Volkswagen and Ford, who may enter F1 in the future.
"We understand that such an approach has broad support from the competing manufacturers," Mosley said.

I dunno. Seems to be moving away from a series that is a technological tour de force to more of a spec series with only a handful of innovations.
I can tell you that if it becomes more like CART I'll be losing interest. In the past five years I have continued to lose more and more interest in them and was really hoping the new chassis would reignite my interest this year. That hasn't happened. I'm not sure I like what F1 is doing but I'm willing to see how it plays out before I pass final judgment.

Agreed. He is almost single-handedly ruining F1. I REALLY hope that the teams don't stand for this, and that they all protest the idea of V6 engines at such limited revs.
No wonder Ford and VW are interested in joining F1 after 2011, because with revs limited to under 11,000 with V6 engines, it would no longer be the premier motorsport in the world.
Mosley wants to make F1 "more relevant to production cars" which is absolutely ridiculous. F1 has *never* been about that; it's always been about pushing the envelope in speed, technology, aerodynamics, etc. That's the whole reason F1 was always the top motorsport in the world.
Turbo engines are fine, I have no problem with that myself as long as they keep the revs high in the 18,000 - 20,000 RPM range. What would truly excite me is if they implemented the five GP engine rule, but kept revs at the current high range. It would really mean pushing the envelope in terms of engine technology.

i think reducing engine pistons to V8 is restricting enough
and most performance sports cars nowadays are V8 too so why bother going to V6?
F1 isnt just about engine technology

If this happens I'll quit watching F1 all together. I'm already really disliking the fact that there is only one tire manufacturer now and they're putting out controlled tires that are nowhere near as good as last years compound. That alone has made the 2007 season far less exciting than 2006 IMO. That and the fact that MS is no longer racing is a bummer, but it was nice seeing him in the Ferrari garage at Barcelona.

Ok... changing the engine to a V6 is one thing... but changing the revs to max at 11k is a completely different thing. I wasn't too pleased when they said they were going from the v10 to the v8... but, they pulled it off rather seemlessly maintaining the competetive edge. I think this new proposal is just ridiculous.
