[insert comment about how ugly the civic looks and how much more green the prius is]

Was anyone able to find out how they rated the car? There is only the "green" scale, but I can't seem to find how they came up with the numbers

The upper right has a link to the definition of "Green Rating" and how it was derived although no details on each car.

".......The Green Rating covers all the major environmental costs of a motor vehicle, including:

>Unhealthy smog that comes from tailpipes.
>Emissions of greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
>The fuel a vehicle consumes.
>Pollution from manufacturing the vehicle and its components.
.....etc."

Hmmm...

The Lotus Elise, Porsche Cayman, and even the Tacoma made the list...

If they actually used the ratings criteria they mentioned, then the Hybrid (battery) vehicles wouldn't even be on the list due to waste products in the battery creation and disposal process.

There is no such thing as man-made global warming....it's all propaganda and this whole green thing is all a chirade. It's really starting to **** me off how the public just goes along with this farce.

True but we know the pre-08 ratings for hype-rids are a crock.

Can't wait for all the '08 ratings to get a better comparison.

Wouldn't they float away like Zeppelins then?

Anyway, I'm not sure how true this list is - something like 3/4 of all the Land Rover Defenders made in the last 50 years are still on the road so their whole life costs spread over those years must make them one of the greenest.

Amen. Greenies don't tell you that the Krakatoa eruption released more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than all the rest of human history. And that high CO2 concentrations FOLLOW warming trends and are the result of the warming, not the cause. Just how the UN report completely ignored the warming that made Greenland truly GREEN back in the 10th and 11th centuries; which is now buried under TONS of ice. Or how there was no ice at the north pole and less ice in the south. So much evidence they ignore to push on their agenda That agenda being the acquisition of more funding dollars to put in their pockets.

Not saying there's no pollution, there is: toxic waste, landfills, deforestation, etc, its just the alarmist global warming thing is a load of crap. I believe all of it can now be and has been disproven.

Read the article. It's not just about MPG's.

The Prius uses more energy to manufacture than the 1st place Civic.

This is something I'm constantly trying to tell people...hybrids are complex and expensive to produce. Diesels get basically the same mileage and are far simpler, although they do pollute a little more in the process.

Then shouldn't it be at the end of the list, if the way they manufacture it. I am remembering that article someone posted about how it would take x-amount of years for the Prius to be such a clean car compared too a Hummer.

If this whole chirade forces a shift in the way we think and conduct ourselves, isn't that a good thing? If it encourages people to stop being so wasteful and ignorant of the environment around us, isn't that a good thing? Sometimes the end result is more important than the means we used to arrive at that point.

The energy used to recharge the batteries on an electric has to come from somewhere...
